Greetings!
St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.
St. Thomas has a great respect for both the rich liturgical heritage of the church and for living the message of social justice proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Whether you are young or old, gay or straight, single, married or in a relationship, female or male, poor or wealthy, you are welcome at St. Thomas just as you are...a child of God and an inheritor of God's grace. |

NEW AWNING
We give thanks to the anonymous donor for donating the new awning above the Great Doors. We are especially grateful to American Awning Co. for replicating our old awning in only 10 days (normal turnaround is 4-6 weeks) so that it could be installed by Easter Day! |
"Easter Wings"
A poem by George Herbert
(1593-1633)
Before reading the poem below, look at it sideways and see the image formed by the lines of the poem. This is a visual as well as a verbal poem; Herbert wrote it to appear as a pair of wings, thus emphasizing the same theme found in the word themselves. In each "wing" the first stanza describes a downward journey - humans descend from the Garden of Eden into an impoverished state, and from innocence into sin - a journey that the second half of the "wing" reverses, allowing the speaker to soar "with Thee." The poem's title makes clear that these are wings of new life, of Christ's - and thereby the sinner's - resurrection from sin and death.
Lord, Who createdst man in wealth and store,
Though foolishly he lost the same,
Decaying more and more,
Till he became
Most poore
With Thee
O let me rise,
As larks, harmoniously,
And sing this day Thy victories:
Then shall the fall further the flight in me.
My tender age in sorrow did beginne;
And still with sicknesses and shame
Thou didst so punish sinne,
That I became
Most thine.
With Thee
Let me combine,
And feel this day Thy victorie;
For, if I imp my wing on Thine,
Affliction shall advance the flight in me.
