Greetings!
St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.
St. Thomas has a great respect for both the rich liturgical heritage of the church and for living the message of social justice proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Whether you are young or old, gay or straight, single, married or in a relationship, female or male, poor or wealthy, you are welcome at St. Thomas just as you are...a child of God and an inheritor of God's grace. |

"The Look" &
"The Meaning of the Look"
A pair of sonnets by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861)
After his Last Supper, Jesus tells his disciples that they will all fall away; Peter objects that he would never abandon Jesus, that he would lay down his life for Jesus. Jesus responds, "Truly I tell you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times" (St. Mark 14:26-31), and indeed after Jesus' arrest, Peter does just that, denying three times even knowing Jesus. In St. Luke's version of this betrayal story, after the last denial, "the Lord turned and looked at Peter," a look that makes Peter break down and "wept bitterly" (St. Luke 22:61-62). In the following pair of sonnets, Elizabeth Barrett Browning reflects on this look, imagining what is going on in the mind and heart of Jesus at this moment. She is particularly interested in the absence of divine judgment and condemnation of Peter despite his terrible betrayal. Notice at the end of the second sonnet that Jesus reverses Peter's denial, declaring, "I KNOW this man."
"The Look"
The Savior looked on Peter. Ay, no word,
No gesture of reporach! The heavens serene,
Though heavy with armed justice, did not lean
Their thunders that way! the forsaken Lord
Looked only on the traitor. None record
What that look was, none guess: for those who have seen
Wronged lovers loving through a death-pang ken,
Or pale-cheeked martyrs smiling to a sword,
Have missed Jehovah at the judgment -
'I never knew this man' - did quail and fall, call.
And Peter, from the height of blasphemy
As knowing straight THAT GOD - turned free
And went out speechless from the face of all,
And filled the silence, weeping bitterly.
"The Meaning of the Look"
I think that look of Christ might seem to say -
'Thou Peter! art thou then a common stone
Which I at last must break my heart upon
For all God's charge to his high angels may
Guard my foot better? Did I yesterday
Wash thy feet, my beloved, that they should run
Quick to deny me 'neath the morning sun?
And do thy kisses, like the rest, betray?
The cock crows coldly. - GO, and manifest
A late contrition, but no bootless fear!
For when thy final need is dreariest,
Thou shalt not be denied, as I am here;
My voice to God and angels shall attest,
"ecause I KNOW this man, let him be clear.

On This Day in Church History
On this day in 1858, Episcopal Priest Dudley Tyne spoke to a rally of over 5,000 men in Philadelphia. "I would rather this right arm were amputated at the trunk than that I should come short of my duty to you in delivering God's message," he said. Over 1,000 men were converted that day. Two weeks later, Tyne lost his right arm in a farming accident, and he died soon after. His last words, "Stand up for Jesus, father, and tell my brethren of the ministry to stand up for Jesus," inspired the hymn "Stand up, Stand up for Jesus".
