Greetings!
St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.
St. Thomas has a great respect for both the rich liturgical heritage of the church and for living the message of social justice proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Whether you are young or old, gay or straight, single, married or in a relationship, female or male, poor or wealthy, you are welcome at St. Thomas just as you are...a child of God and an inheritor of God's grace. |

St. Chad, Bishop of Lichfield, Missionary, 672
 | Image of St. Chad in a stained glass window from Holy Cross Monastery, West Park, New York |
St. Chad was the first bishop of Mercia and Lindsey at Lichfield. He was the the brother of St. Cedd, whom he succeeded as Abbot of Lastingham, North Yorkshire, and a disciple of St. Aidan, who sent him to Ireland as part of his education.
Around 664, St. Chad was chosen by King Oswi of Northumbria to serve as Bishop. Faced with the fact that there were very few English Bishops, St. Chad made an unwise decision to be consecrated the simoniacal Bishop Wine of Dorchester. This act would lead to his being deposed by Theodore, Archbishop of Canterbury in 669; however, Theodore soon reconsecrated St. Chad to be Bishop of the Mercians. This unusual act was due both to the new opening of Christianity in Mercia and to the excellent character of St. Chad himself, whom St. Bede recognized as being unusually humble, devout, zealous and apostolic. St. Chad's Episcopate of three years laid the foundations of the see of Lichfield.
St. Chad died on 2 March 672 and was buried in the Church of St. Mary; however, at once, he was venerated as a saint and his relics were translated to the Cathedral Church of St. Peter.
At some unknown date during King Henry VIII's reign, the head and some other bones had been separated from the main shrine. Some of these, it was claimed, were preserved by recusants, and four large bones, believed to be St. Chad's, are in the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Birmingham.

The Guibord Center presents "The Kabbalah and Grappling with Darkness" with Rabbi Finley
Sunday, 11 March 1:30pm
St. John's Pro-Cathedral
514 West Adams St.
The Kabbalah is rooted in the notion of the exile of God, the brokenness of the Divine. The darkness in the human soul that we often experience is the human experience of the Divine rupture. When we grapple with our darkness, we are not grappling with what is wrong with us, but rather with a particular expression of Divine exile present in us. As we heal ourselves, the Kabbalah tells us, we heal the Divine. How do we engage in that work of healing? How do we be present to and partner with others who are engaged in that work? Can we create communities that know how to grapple with darkness, to aid in the Divine overcoming its own exile? Rabbi Finley will touch on these and other questions in his presentation. Click here to RSVP!
The Guibord Center is a non-profit organization whose mission is to bring people together to challenge assumptions, unleash The Holy and affirm the faith that transforms the world.
