Greetings!

St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.  We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.

St. Thomas has a great respect for both the rich liturgical heritage of the church and for living the message of social justice proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Whether you are young or old, gay or straight, single, married or in a relationship, female or male, poor or wealthy, you are welcome at St. Thomas just as you are...a child of God and an inheritor of God's grace.

Parking Survey to be Conducted
As many of you know, a new parking regulation for the area south of Runyon Park - including the streets surrounding St. Thomas - recently went into effect.  The new regulation prohibits street parking near St. Thomas on weekends, unless the parishioner has a special permit.  Parking permits for the area are generally reserved only for residents.

Because the major days of worship at St. Thomas are on the weekend - the Vigil Mass on Saturday and the High and Low Masses on Sunday - the new regulation presents a serious threat to St. Thomas by placing a significant burden on many parishioners who travel to St. Thomas to attend weekend services.  In fact, we believe the new restriction is so misguided that it violates federal law which prohibits the City from imposing a substantial burden on a person's right to exercise religion unless the City has a very good reason and the City can demonstrate that the regulation is the least restrictive means of furthering a legitimate goal.  (Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000, 42 U.S.C. § 2000cc et seq.)  So far, we believe the City has failed to meet its legal obligation to the St. Thomas community to find a solution to this problem that does not infringe upon your right to worship.

Many of you have already contacted District 4 Councilman Tom LaBonge and others at the City to object to the new regulation and to explain the affect it has placed on your right to free and unfettered religious exercise.  For this, we thank you profusely.  However, more still needs to be done.

We believe St. Thomas and its parishioners must continue to explain to the City and to Councilman LaBonge how serious the parking situation is for the entire St. Thomas family.  Therefore, we have prepared a brief questionnaire which asks you to provide some basic information and explain the burden the parking restriction has had - or will have - on your ability to worship at St. Thomas. This survey will be inserted in all Orders of Service this coming weekend. Please take a few minutes to fill out the questionnaire.  Your name will be kept confidential unless you specifically agree that St. Thomas can use it in its dealings with the City regarding the parking issue.

Once you have filled out the questionnaire, please provide it to any Church officer, or hand it in at the table that will be set up to accept questionnaires after the Masses.  Alternatively, you can send the scanned questionnaire to the Parish Office admin@saintthomashollywood.org or fax it to (323) 876-7738.

Thank you so much for your love and support during this critical time for St. Thomas the Apostle Hollywood.

St. Thomas Aquinas, Priest, Philosopher, Teacher, 1274 (January 28)
"Thomas Aquinas"
by Fra Bartolommeo
St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) was an Italian Dominican priest of the Church, and an immensely influential philosopher and theologian in the tradition of scholasticism, known as Doctor Angelicus. "Aquinas" is not a surname, but is a Latin adjective meaning "of Aquino", his place of birth. He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology (theology based on reason and ordinary experience), and the father of Thomism (a realist philosophy which believes truth is true wherever it is found). His influence on Western thought is considerable, and much of modern philosophy was conceived as a reaction against, or as an agreement with his ideas, particularly in the areas of ethics, natural law, metaphysics, and political theory.

Thomas is held in the Church to be the model teacher for those studying priesthood. The owrds for which he is best-known are the Summa Theologica (a manuel for beginners in theology which presents reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West; it is famous for, among other things, its five arguments for the existence of God) and the Summa Contra Gentiles (a mixture of several categories, but mainly scriptural commentaries and Aristotelian commentaries). As one of the 33 Doctors of the Church, he is considered the Church's greatest theologian and philosopher.

During the Devil's Advocate process of his canonization, to the objection that St. Thomas Aquinas produced no miracles, one cardinal answered, "there are as many miracles as articles [in the Summa Theologica]." That is to say, thousands!

On this day in 1343, Pope Clement VI issued Bull Unigenitus to justify the power of the pope and the use of indulgences. This document was later used in the defence of indulgences after Martin Luther pinned his 95 Theses to a church in Wittenberg in 1517.
