Greetings!

St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.  We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.

St. Thomas has a great respect for both the rich liturgical heritage of the church and for living the message of social justice proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Whether you are young or old, gay or straight, single, married or in a relationship, female or male, poor or wealthy, you are welcome at St. Thomas just as you are...a child of God and an inheritor of God's grace.

Help Wanted

Help Wanted!  Every Sunday, and on special holy days, we record and upload the sermons, and sometimes entire masses, to our website and onto YouTube.com.  We have viewers as far away as Hungary tuning in to what is happening at St. Thomas!  Our Christmas Eve High Mass has been viewed by 350 people on YouTube alone.  The video recordings of sermons and masses are also posted on our Facebook page.  This is a vital outreach and means of making our presence known in Los Angeles and around the world.  If you have computer and video-editing skills, your help is needed.  Please contact Ken Koonce (323-856-5844) or Randy Oglesby (323-655-1852) if you would like to volunteer time to this important ministry.

St. Anthony (January 17)

St. AnthonyAnthony the Great or Antony the Great (c. 251-356), also known as Saint Anthony, Anthony the Abbot, Anthony of Egypt, Anthony of the Desert, Anthony the Anchorite, Abba Antonius and Father of All Monks, was a Christian saint from Egypt, a prominent leader among the Desert Fathers.

The biography of Anthony's life by Athanasius of Alexandria helped to spread the concept of monasticism, particularly in Western Europe through Latin translations. He is often erroneously considered the first monk, but as his biography and other sources make clear, there were many ascetics before him. Anthony was, however, the first known ascetic going into the wilderness(from between AD 270-271), a geographical shift that seems to have contributed to his renown.

Anthony is appealed to against infectious diseases, particularly skin diseases. "Saint Anthony's fire" has described different afflictions including ergotism, erysipelas and shingles.

He was secretly buried on the mountain-top where he had chosen to live. His remains were reportedly discovered in 361, and transferred to Alexandria. Some time later, they were taken from Alexandria to Constantinople, so that they might escape the destruction being perpetrated by invading Saracens. Later, in the eleventh century, the emperor gave them to the French count Jocelin. Jocelin had them transferred to La-Motte-Saint-Didier, which was then renamed Saint-Antoine-en-Dauphiné.  There, Anthony is credited with assisting in a number of miraculous healings, primarily from ergotism, which became known as "St. Anthony's Fire". He was credited by two local noblemen of assisting them in recovery from the disease. They then founded the Hospital Brothers of St. Anthony in honour of him.
January 17 is his feast day.

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee

The Church of England is encouraging its 13,000 parishes to engage with communities to celebrate The Queen's Diamond Jubilee, as it announces its participation in two national initiatives - The Big Jubilee Lunch and The Big Thank You - via a helpful website section and online video at , produced by Mission and Public Affairs Division and the Communications Office of the Archbishops' Council.
How to have a Big Jubilee Lunch
How to have a Big Jubilee Lunch

The brainchild of the Eden Project and championed ecumenically by HOPE, The Big Jubilee Lunch will see millions across the country joining together to have lunch on the afternoon of Sunday, June 3rd; the Church of England is encouraging parishes to register their own Big Jubilee Lunch , or join in with one already registered locally to make it even bigger and better.

To give people an opportunity to say a personal thank you to The Queen for 60 years of service, many cathedrals and churches are taking part in The Big Thank You; the public will be invited to add their signature and well wishes to a letter to Her Majesty The Queen signed by the diocesan bishop and made available for personal thank-yous in the participating cathedrals and churches. These letters will be compiled into one national Big Thank You and delivered to Buckingham Palace.

The Revd Richard Frank of All Souls Church, St Margarets, Twickenham, encourages churches to get involved with The Big Jubilee Lunch on the new website section at , writing: "All Souls Church first got involved with the Big Lunch launch event in 2009, since when we've helped host the street party alongside our local residents' association each year. The roads that meet at the corner of our church building are closed and we fill the space with tables and chairs, set up a 'bandstand' on the corner - for live, locally 'sourced' music - and provide a bouncy castle, free face-painting and hot drinks in the church garden. It helps, of course, that the Big Lunch date is always a Sunday, so the congregation spilling out of the morning service join with other local residents, young and old, each bringing food to eat and share. Our experience has been that it's a fantastic way to engage with our neighbours, bless the community and open up the doors of church to those who'd never usually make it, even into church the garden. In 2012 the Big Lunch is one of the official events helping celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. We'd enthusiastically recommend it for any local church in a residential area."

A Note from your Editor

For the past nearly four years it's been my priviledge to put together this eNewsletter.  Researching the Saints, the history of the Church and all of the other bits and pieces has been my own Catechuman class, without the Saturday morning commitment!

As my Vestry term ends on Sunday I know that the eNews will continue on and grow and prosper with new blood and new visions.

Many of you know that my prayers have been answered and after three years of unemployment I am now the Executive Director of a GLBT Arts organization in St. Paul, MN.  While I have physically moved to the frozen tundra part of my heart and soul will always be at Hollywood & Gardner.  In fact I'll be back every few months for long weekends, the first being in early February.

My thanks to all who have made my 14 year journey at St. Thomas so special.  See  you Sunday (via Skype).

God Bless you!
