eNews 16 September 2011

Greetings!

St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.  We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.

St. Thomas has a great respect for both the rich liturgical heritage of the church and for living the message of social justice proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Whether you are young or old, gay or straight, single, married or in a relationship, female or male, poor or wealthy, you are welcome at St. Thomas just as you are...a child of God and an inheritor of God's grace.

Welcome back Fr. Davies!

On September 1 we welcomed  Fr. Ian Elliott Davies back to his Parish ministry at St. Thomas the Apostle.

Please contact the office to schedule a one-on-one meeting with Father.   The Clergy ROTA for September is published below.

On September 30, 2011 at 7:30pm we will have a Parish wide Service of Reconciliation with Fr. Davies Celebrating and Bishop Mary D. Glasspool preaching.

We thank you for your patience, love and support of Fr. Davies, your Vestry and Officers, your Bishop and your Parish during this time.

St. Francis of Assisi - Oct 2

GOD BLESS OUR PETS!

Please join us in celebration and blessing of those special creatures that are members of our families.

Join us on October 2 to celebrate the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi ("Flea Sunday") before, during and after the 10:30 High Mass. The usual blessing ceremony will happen during the Mass but this year the children of St. Thomas will assist before and after the Mass to love and care for our pets. Our kids will have water, treats and love to share with our beloved pets.

Attention all St. Thomas parents: Please join us at 10:15 outside the entrance to Church to set up water bowls and snacks. Please be prepared to help after Mass as well. We would also appreciate if you could bring snacks for cats and dogs as well as disposable bowls we can fill with water in the kitchen. Please contact David Seck A.S.A.P at [email protected]  if you can bring supplies and your children to assist with this important event.

St. Matthew the Apostle (Sept. 21)

St MatthewMatthew the Evangelist was one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus and one of the four Evangelists.

Among the early followers and apostles of Jesus, Matthew is mentioned as a former tax collector from Capernaum who was called into the circle of the Twelve by Jesus. He is also named among the number of the Twelve.  According to the New Testament he was one of the witnesses of the Resurrection and the Ascension.

When Matthew is mentioned in the New Testament, he is sometimes found paired with Thomas. The New Testament records that as a disciple, he followed Jesus, and was one of the witnesses of the Resurrection and the Ascension. The disciples remained in and about Jerusalem and proclaimed that Jesus was the promised Messiah.

Matthew preached the Gospel in Hebrew to the Jewish community in Judea.  Later in his ministry, he would travel to Gentile nations and spread the Gospel to the Ethiopians.

Like the other evangelists, Matthew is often depicted in Christian art with one of the four living creatures of Revelation 4:7. The one that accompanies him is in the form of a winged man. The three paintings of Matthew by Caravaggio in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome, where he is depicted as called by Christ from his profession as gatherer, are among the landmarks of Western art.

Matthew is recognized as a Saint in the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran and Anglican churches. His feast day is celebrated on September 21 in the West. His relics are said to be preserved in the Salerno Cathedral in Italy.

St. Agnes Club to meet

St Agnes Garden Guild will meet on Sunday October 09 after High Mass in the Sunday School Room at 12:15pm to discuss the fall planting plan for the parish grounds.

According to Bishop James Ussher (1581-1656), God created the universe on October 23, 4004 BC. That would make the universe 6000 years old in 1997 AD. James Ussher was an Irish Archbishop whose chronology of Biblical history was widely accepted throughout Christianity.

Mother Knows Best

On September 16 in 1976, the 65th General Convention of the Episcopal Church officially approved the ordination of women. This action allowed the official recognition of fifteen women previously ordained in Philadelphia and Washington. Three and a half months later Jacqueline Means of Indianapolis, Indiana, became the first woman ordained into the Episcopal Church after its official sanction.
