Greetings!
St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.
St. Thomas has a great respect for both the rich liturgical heritage of the church and for living the message of social justice proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Whether you are young or old, gay or straight, single, married or in a relationship, female or male, poor or wealthy, you are welcome at St. Thomas just as you are...a child of God and an inheritor of God's grace. |

Rector's Corner
It was with very much sadness that we learned of the death of long-time Parishioner Robert McConnell, RIP, last week. Many of you will recall Robert's gentle kindness, his quiet hospitality and beaming smile each Sunday morning. Johnny, Robert's partner for forty five years died in 2009 and one cannot help but feel that dealt a terrible, terrible blow to such a softly-spoken yet deeply compassionate individual. When I see such warm-hearted love in someone so committed to following Christ it saddens me that we spend so much of our time 'fighting our corners' or trivializing the message proclaimed by Christ who prayed 'that they may all be One.' If there were more kindly individuals as Robert in our world life would reveal a good many blessings. It is given to us the privilege to know Robert and now, our faith teaches us, he makes his journey onward in the company of the innumerable angelic Hosts of Heaven. Please pray for the Repose of Robert's soul- I am certain that he carries our prayers to the Throne before the Glory of God.
with my love & prayers

St. Columba - June 09
Saint Columba (7 December 521 - 9 June 597 AD) was a Gaelic Irish missionary monk who propagated Christianity among the Picts during the Early Medieval Period. He was one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland.
Columba is credited as being a leading figure in the revitalization of monasticism. His achievements illustrated the importance of the Celtic church in bringing a revival of Christianity to Western Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire.
The vita of Columba contains a story that has been interpreted as the first reference to the Loch Ness Monster. According to Adomnán, Columba came across a group of Picts who were burying a man who had been killed by the monster, and saved a swimmer with the sign of the Cross and the imprecation "You will go no further," at which the beast fled terrified, to the amazement of the assembled Picts who glorified Columba's God. Whether or not this incident is true, Adomnan's text specifically states that the monster was swimming in the River Ness - the river flowing from the loch - rather than in Loch Ness itself. Through the reputation of its venerable founder and its position as a major European centre of learning, Columba's Iona became a place of pilgrimage. A network of Celtic high crosses marking processional routes developed around his shrine at Iona.
Columba is historically revered as a warrior saint, and was often invoked for victory in battle.
Saint Columba is the patron saint of the city of Derry, Northern Ireland. The saint founded a monastic settlement there in c. AD 540. The name of the city in Irish is Doire Colmcille and is derived from the native oak trees in the area and the city's association with the great saint. Today, the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Columba's Long Tower stands at the spot of this original settlement. There is also a Church of Ireland Cathedral dedicated to St Columba in Derry.
Today, Aer Lingus, Ireland's national flag carrier has named one of its Airbus A330 aircraft in commemoration of the saint.
St. Columba's feast day is June 9.

Let Us Walk Together
The Nippon Sei Ko Kai
(Anglican Communion in Japan) has launched its "Let Us Walk Together" project in support of the victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that wrought destruction along Japan's east coast and left about 30,000 people dead or missing.
The magnitude-9 earthquake, the strongest to hit the country, seriously damaged the Fukushima nuclear plant, resulting in radioactive pollution that has forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes.
The NSKK steering committee, which met in late April, recently issued a mission statement announcing the project that commits to rebuilding the lives and communities of the disaster victims, in particular the elderly, children, those with disabilities, foreign residents, low-income people, and refugees.
"Many have lost family and friends, homes and savings. Many still have no choice but to stay in emergency shelters," said the Most Rev. Nathaniel Makoto Uematsu, NSKK primate, in a recent statement.
"The steering committee ... [is] calling for help in supporting the victims of the disaster not only from the various churches and related groups of the NSKK, but also in cooperation with other church denominations and overseas churches as well," said Uematsu. "We humbly ask for your understanding and support, and especially your prayers for the success of this undertaking."
The "Let Us Walk Together" project will be based in Sendai, where an NSKK office for disaster response was opened on May 6.
In addition to conducting support activities through the Sendai office and in other disaster-stricken areas, this project will conduct public relations, liaison, and accounting functions with the cooperation of NSKK provincial office staff, an NSKK release said.
"We will carry out activities supported by the prayers and monetary contributions of Anglican churches throughout Japan and the world," the release said. "We will respond to such prayers and support through our reporting and publicizing of relief conditions and relief activities." |
