Greetings!

St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.  We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.
Rector's Corner

Fr DaviesDear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,

The day, the week and the weekend of Thanksgiving brings before our attention, each year, the blessings, gifts and graces that God shares with all His people through every age and in every place. I am always impressed by the kindness and generosity that so many individuals and communities show to one another. This year I also read in a parishioner's online 'blog' about being able to render thanks to God even (perhaps one might say 'especially') in the remembrance of Thanksgiving Days past-and one must acknowledge that there may also be a certain 'heaviness' in one's heart in recalling departed loved ones, or friends, or fellow community members as we do so. Grief is an unavoidable part of life- every life- since we are human beings who know and understand God most clearly 'in relationship.'

Looking back on the many happy days past recalls and brings to our attention those who now worship God in His nearer Presence- and isn't it one of those ironies of the Christian faith that it is in those very times that offering Thanksgiving to God can be most articulate and moving?
I send my love & prayers and blessing for this Thanksgiving season and I render thanks to God in each remembrance of you and your love for our Parish Community and family,

ied sig

Stewarding the Mysteries of God

Stewardship Logo 2010O God, who hast been pleased to call us to be Ambassadors for thee, make us now of one heart and mind to pray and work and give for the up-building and strengthening of thy Church at home and abroad. Bless our Every Member Canvass, and stir up the wills of all our people to do according to their ability as good stewards in thy service; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

There are many pledge cards that have been distributed that have yet to be received back.  The 2011 Parish Budget that funds our Ministries is being developed now and is based on pledge cards received.  To insure that your gift is considered as part of the 2011 Parish Budget, please return the Pledge card as soon as possible to the Parish Office.

We are grateful to the prayerful consideration that the following individuals have given by pledging to St. Thomas the Apostle in 2011.  (Listing as of 23 November 2010.)

St. Andrew

St AndrewSaint Andrew (early first century-mid to late first century AD) is a Christian Apostle and the brother of Saint Peter. The name "Andrew" (Greek: manly, brave, "manhood, valour"), appears to have been common among the Jews from the second or third century BC. He is considered the founder and first bishop of the Church of Byzantium and is consequently the patron saint of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

The New Testament states that Andrew was the brother of Simon Peter, by which it is inferred that he was likewise a son of Jonah, or John.[Mt. 16:17] [Jn. 1:42] He was born in Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee.[Jn. 1:44] Both he and his brother Peter were fishermen by trade, hence the tradition that Jesus called them to be his disciples by saying that he will make them "fishers of men."

The Gospel of John states that Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist, whose testimony first led him and John the Evangelist to follow Jesus.[Jn. 1:35-40] Andrew at once recognized Jesus as the Messiah, and hastened to introduce him to his brother.[Jn. 1:41] Thenceforth, the two brothers were disciples of Christ. On a subsequent occasion, prior to the final call to the Apostolate, they were called to a closer companionship, and then they left all things to follow Jesus.

Eusebius quotes Origen as saying Andrew preached in Asia Minor and in Scythia, along the Black Sea as far as the Volga and Kiev. Hence he became a patron saint of Ukraine, Romania and Russia. According to tradition, he founded the See of Byzantium (Constantinople) in AD 38, installing Stachys as bishop. His presence in Byzantium is also mentioned in the apocryphal Acts of Andrew, written in the second century. This diocese would later develop into the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Andrew is recognized as its patron saint.

The feast of Andrew is observed on November 30 in both the Eastern and Western churches, and is the national day of Scotland. In the traditional liturgical books of the Catholic church, the feast of St. Andrew is the first feast day in the Proper of Saints.

Mass Setting for Advent

EDITORS NOTE:  With the start of Advent the liturgy returns to using Mass Settings.  "MIssa O Magnum" is the setting for the Advent Season.

Tomas Luis de Victoria was born in the province of Avila, Spain in 1548 and died in 1611. He is considered by most musical scholars as one of the greatest Spanish Composers of the Renaissance style. His music, mostly religious choral works, venture away from the traditional counterpoint of many of his contemporaries such as Palestrina and Morales by using simple melodic lines and homophonic textures.  Victoria's music reflected his personality.  In his music, the passion of Spanish mysticism and religion is expressed.

The "Missa O Magnum" is a mass setting using melodic themes taken from his famous motet "O Magnum Mysterium." This work is known as a parody mass. Pietro Cerone, a contemporary of Victoria, describes the "rules" of parody mass composition as the common practice of composers when unifying the five movements of an Ordinary of the Mass setting around a model composition. Each movement (Kyrie, Gloria, etc.) should begin with the opening motif of the model and end with the closing; internal motivic material may used in the movements However Victoria once again ventures away from the traditional model and only two movements of this Mass -- Kyrie and Sanctus -- allude to the motet's memorable opening, in which pairs of voices imitate a motif of a falling fifth. Some sectional closings borrow music which closes a section of the motet (on text "jacentem in presepio").

Victoria published the Missa O magnum himself in 1592, in his third collection of masses; he published this volume in Rome, while on leave from his position as convent chaplain to the Dowager Empress Maria in Madrid.

Subverting the Secular World

We have to tackle a number of years. There's the school year, the secular year, the shopping year, and the poor neglected church year. In a sense we live in all of them, and keeping our feet planted in each reality is no easy thing. All too often we only remember that the church has a year when we look at the bulletin on Sunday and try to figure which Sunday after what we are in.

Of all these years, the Christian year presents the greatest challenge. It reminds us that we are citizens of another place and owe our allegiance to another ruler. The early Christians were persecuted and killed because they claimed that "Jesus is Lord." Perhaps today we are regarded as rather eccentric when we whisper the same words. They remind us that our faith is no private, personal thing, but that we are citizens of the kingdom of God.

We are subversive. We seek to bring the love of Christ into the secular world because we believe that ultimately the world will be restored to God. In the meantime, we work and pray to transform what is into what shall be.
Advent Sunday begins yet another year. It sets our sights on the miracle of Christ's birth, that God invaded this planet in the form of a helpless child. This vulnerable God walks with us, takes our flesh, re-creates the human race, suffers, dies and so is in all our sufferings and in our deaths.

He rises again giving us the hope of resurrected life in a new heaven and a new earth.

We perhaps moan about a secularized Christmas that begins before Thanksgiving and ends abruptly on the day after Christmas. Rather than moaning, we can meet the challenge it presents. We can be subversive by keeping Advent in holy preparation. We can keep Christmas by observing the twelve days in joy, gratitude and compassion for God's poor and needy, rather than throwing out the tree on December 26!

Above all we can humble ourselves before the baby who is King, and offer him our lives in obedience and hope.

Happy New Year!  Advent commences the new liturgical year and it is a fitting time to slightly modify the look of the eNews.  We hope that you enjoy it!

Men's Room Rebuild

The Men's Room in the Parish Hall has seriously deteriorated over the past several years, from over-use, age, and other issues.  Starting on Monday the Men's Room is being rebuilt and expanded.  The sub-floor has rotted away and will be replaced completely.  The janitorial closet will be relocated allowing for an additional stall to be added.  When the project is completed there will be 2 stalls and 2 urinals - double the capacity, with a new sub-floor and new tile.  It is anticipated that this work will be completed during the week and will not affect weekend services.  This project is funded through the General Fund budget for Maintenance & Repairs and there is no increase to the overall budget to accomplish this long planned project.  We hope to address the Women's Room in 2011, budget permitting.

Thank you for your patience & understanding during the week of renovation!

Angel Tree

Angel Tree

It's Angel Tree time again! This year we at St. Thomas are assisting children at two groups!  Hillsides is the LA Episcopal Diocese foster care and treatment center for kids who are at-risk. http://www.hillsides.org/  IRIS is the non-denominational response to the needs of refugees settling in LA area.  IRIS help familes and children from Iraq, Somalia, Congo,  and other countries in serious difficultiesIt's also a ministry of our diocese and strongly supported by our Bishops. http://ministries.ladiocese.org/iris.html

In total we're assisting 40 kids from these organizations. For most of these children, this will be the only present they receive.

We urge you to explore the ministries and work of these two very worthy organizations.

The Angel Tree will be available starting this Sunday, November 28nd, and the (unwrapped) gifts should be returned by Sunday, December 12th.

The IRIS familes also desperately need food for their tables, so, if you are able, we are also collecting grocery gift cards. There will be a sign-up sheet under the tree.

Thank you for your generosity!

Who is Christ for Me?

Dr. Thomas Doyle will lead this 2-part Adult Educational Series.  Inspired by a recent sermon by the retired Bishop of San Francisco, William Swing, Dr. Doyle argues that in the past 50 years, Christ has come to the American Episcopal Church in three movements looking for a room in which to appear:  (1) in the civil rights movement; (2) in the women's movement; and (3) in the gay ordination movement.  In each movement, His advent was tumultuous, and not everyone in the Episcopal Church expressed welcome.  A fourth movement is on the horizon, and it is related to the matters of interfaith relations.  St. Paul in his first Epistle to Blessed Timothy claims that there is no other mediator on earth between humanity and the Father but the man, Jesus Christ.  Who is this Christ that is coming?  What does it mean to welcome Him today?

SOVA Outreach

SOVA

St. Thomas' Community Outreach Committee continues our food drive to benefit SOVA food pantries this holiday season.  We collect food throughout the year to benefit SOVA, one of the St. Thomas partners in the Homeless Coalition.  During the upcoming holidays our goal is to fill the SOVA food bin twice during the holidays, once before Thanksgiving and once before Christmas.  The food bin is located in the foyer near the church office during the week and will be in the recreation hall during coffee hour on Sundays throughout the holidays and is marked with a large red arrow.  The following items are needed:
  • Canned and packaged foods
  • Personal hygiene products (especially disposable razors, shampoo, soap, feminine hygiene items,  disposable diapers and  deodorant)
  • Ribbon and other basket-making equipment and supplies for Baskets of Hope
  • New or gently used children's books
