Greetings!

St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.  We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In last week's Rector's Corner I mentioned the task of 'living and worshipping through the Ordinary Time of the Church's calendar.' It struck me as I was preparing to write these comments for the weeks that I am away on vacation how crucial some of that 'unseen preparation' is (I mentioned our Parish's musicians, lectors, altar guild, acolytes and greeters as being excellent examples of how much preparation is needed) in the life of Our Lord. For thirty years his life was largely unseen, untold (apart from the incident of Christ remaining in the Jerusalem Temple while his parents travelled for three days) and remains unknown to us- apart from those delightfully arcane and romantic apocryphal accounts of His childhood!

The Baptism by St John the Baptist marks the beginning of the 'public ministry.' It is this period of time with which we are more familiar. We only know of those three years of ministry as an adult, leading and teaching, healing and preaching with the Apostles, recorded for us in the Gospels.

It was the great work, the work of redemption and salvation, for which Christ prepared in his 'unseen years' - this is the way in which grace works- and this has always been undertaken in the "ordinary time," in ordinary places by ordinary people. Today, in the Church's celebration of the sacraments Our Lord takes ordinary bread and ordinary wine and places himself deeply, deeply within them, hidden from plain-view and imperceptible to the world. We know that Christ is there because this is exactly how God always works. In just the same manner God hid himself in the Blessed Virgin Mary. He hid himself in Egypt, then Nazareth. He hid himself in the towns and villages of the northern province of Galilee. And there he changed time to eternity, matter to spirit, earth to heaven. God hides himself in you and me. During the three years' ministry already the new creation, so eager, began to break through the "ordinary time." In the Fourth Gospel Lazarus could not remain entombed, in the Synoptics those who had been physically disabled leapt with new life, the mad and broken were made whole, to the amazement and fear of all who witnessed the miracles of recreation.

I send my love & prayers for each of you, that you too may know the hidden work of God's grace in your hearts.

St. Joachim & St. Anne
Feast Day celebrated July 26
Sts Joachim and Anne
Saint Joachim was the husband of Saint Anne and the father of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and therefore is ascribed the title of "forebearer of God", in the Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and Anglican traditions. The story of SS. Joachim and Anne appears in the apocryphal Gospel of James.

The canonical Gospel accounts in the New Testament do not explicitly name either of Mary's parents, but some argue that the genealogy in Luke 3 is that of Mary rather than Joseph, thereby naming her father as Eli. Later traditions, however, specify that this Eli was a first cousin of Mary's father Joachim.

In the Protoevangelium of James, Joachim is described as a rich and pious man of the house of David who regularly gave to the poor and to the temple (synagogue) at Sepphoris. However, as his wife was barren, the high priest rejected Joachim and his sacrifice, as his wife's childlessness was interpreted as a sign of divine displeasure. Joachim consequently withdrew to the desert where he fasted and did penance for forty days. Angels then appeared to both Joachim and Anne to promise them a child. Joachim later returned to Jerusalem and embraced Anne at the city gate.

No liturgical celebration of Saint Joachim was included in the Tridentine Calendar. It was added to the General Roman Calendar in 1584, for celebration on March 20, the day after the feast day of Saint Joseph. In 1738 it was transferred to the Sunday after the Octave of the Assumption. As part of his effort to allow the liturgy of Sundays to be celebrated, Pope Pius X transferred it to August 16, the day after the feast day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, so that St. Joachim may be remembered in the celebration of her triumph.  It was then celebrated as a Double of the 2nd Class, a rank that was changed in 1960 to that of 2nd Class Feast. In 1969 it was joined to that of Saint Anne, for celebration on July 26.

Mount Calvary Retreat to be Sold
Rebuilding too prohibitive

Mt CalveryThe Order of the Holy Cross has decided to sell the Santa Barbara property where the Mount Calvary Retreat House and Monastery was located, Prior Nicholas Radelmiller said July 14. "We met at our annual meeting of the entire order in New York in the middle of June and discussed all of this extensively," Radelmiller said in a July 14 telephone call from St. Mary's Retreat House. The brothers have resided there since a 2008 fire destroyed the 20,000 square-foot Spanish colonial-style Benedictine monastery complex.

Attempting to rebuild the monastery, established in 1947 and located on a ridge above Santa Barbara with a sweeping view of the Pacific Ocean, at today's costs was prohibitive, he added. At the time of the fire, Radelmiller estimated the loss of buildings and property in the millions of dollars.
Also influencing the decision was the order's static growth. "We are not sure that we're going to have enough people in the order in ten years to manage a house here," he said. While new people are joining the order, it is "not quite at the rate we would hope," he said. "We're not dying, but we're not growing."
Five monks continue the Benedictine order's ministry of hospitality at the St. Mary's Retreat House, said Radelmiller. There are about 40 brothers in the entire order, founded in 1884, in four houses in the United States, Canada, and South Africa.
Radelmiller said the order has spent "quite a lot of time thinking about what to do. It's not easy," he added. "Everyone, including ourselves, has got a lot of emotional history with the property and it's very hard to let it go. But it seems really to me the only thing we can do."
The fire was a major shock "and we were quite disorganized for awhile, getting ourselves oriented" to the loss of all personal possessions as well as the retreat center itself, except for a few small paintings and other items.
Sister Abigail, who managed St. Mary's Retreat House at the time of the fire and "very, very generously" invited the brothers to stay there, has rejoined the Sisterhood of the Holy Nativity in Ripon, Wisconsin, he added.
Meanwhile the brothers are managing St. Mary's Retreat House for the nuns, and "our guest ministry is moving right along," he said.
He said that OHC inherited St. Mary's guests and retained their own, and that their rhythm of life continues, praying the daily office, meals, quiet time and offering a ministry of hospitality to guests in search of spiritual sustenance.
"We've learned a lot about how to live with less than we had," he said. "A lot of those things we thought were important perhaps are not as important, so we're fine."
He said the order has received "an enormous amount of favorable comment thus far" about the decision to sell the property. "People realize it's a hard decision but that it's probably the right one."

Faith in times of Terror

Dr Doyle.

What is terrorism? Why does it happen? How is it related to the problem of evil in the world?  What is the proper response of mainstream religious institutions to the insecurity of fundamentalists or identity-driven terrorism?  What is the proper religious attitude and response to political violence?  In short, how does one have faith in times of terror?

Parishioner Dr. Thomas Doyle will lead the three session adult education course.  All are welcome.  August 8, 15, 22.  The sessions start at 12:30pm in the Small Parish Hall after the Sunday Hight Mass.

On July 25 in 325, the Council of Nicea adjourned. The council issued the Nicean Creed and helped define Trinitarian thought along with the truth of Christ's, fully divine and fully human, nature.
