Greetings!
St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world. |
Rector's Corner
From the Rector
Fr. Ian Elliott Davies |
This morning a Parishioner forwarded an article to me regarding the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's recent decision to embrace and honour all of God's children, regardless of sexual orientation. I am certain that many of us have a sense of solidarity and encouragement when we hear such good news. It also reminds me (especially when we hear of disagreements and consternation in our own and other Communions) that it is 'at grass roots level' that people will change attitudes and understanding in these matters. No one is ever 'argued into the Kingdom of God'-- people do not change hearts and minds and emotions by subtle persuasion, violence or anger. People change when they are shown love, understanding, patience, honour, respect and courtesy. The Kingdom of God does not come by argument but by the patient, lifetime witness of love and generosity of heart. I pray that each of us may have deeper love for one another and for those with whom we do not agree.
"How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a naughty world." Wm. Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice.
I send my love & prayers,
Fr Ian Elliott Davies |
St. Catherine of Siena
April 29, 1380
St. Catherine of Siena |
Saint Catherine of Siena, T.O.S.D, (25 March 1347 - 29 April 1380) was a tertiary of the Dominican Order, and a Scholastic philosopher and theologian. She also worked to bring the Papacy back to Rome from its displacement in France, and to establish peace among the Italian city-states. She was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970. She is one of the two patron saints of Italy, together with Francis of Assisi.
Pope Pius II canonized St Catherine in the year 1461. Her feast day, at the time, was not included in the Roman Calendar. When it was added in 1597, it was put on the day of her death, April 29, as now, but because of a conflict with the feast of Saint Peter of Verona, which was also on April 29, it was moved in 1628 to the new date of April 30. In the 1969 revision of the Roman Catholic calendar of saints, it was decided to leave the celebration of the feast of St Peter of Verona to local calendars, because he was not as well known worldwide, and Saint Catherine's feast was restored to its traditional date of April 29.
On 5 May 1940 Pope Pius XII named her a joint Patron Saint of Italy along with Saint Francis of Assisi. Pope Paul VI gave her the title of Doctor of the Church in 1970 along with Saint Teresa of Ávila making them the first women to receive this honour. In 1999, Pope John Paul II made her one of Europe's patron saints. She is also the patroness of the historically Catholic American sorority, Theta Phi Alpha.
Saint Catherine of Siena's Prayer O marvelous wonder of the Church, seraphic virgin, Saint Catherine, because of thine extraordinary virtue and the immense good which thou didst accomplish for the Church and society, thou art acclaimed and blessed by all people. O blessed Catherine, turn thy benign countenance towards me, who confident of thy powerful patronage call upon thee with all the ardor of affection and I beg thee to obtain by thy prayers the favors I so ardently desire (mention your request). Thou wast a victim of charity, who in order to benefit thy neighbor obtained from God the most stupendous miracles and became the joy and the hope of all; thou canst not help but hear the prayers of those who fly to thy heart - that heart which thou didst receive from the Divine Redeemer in a celestial ecstasy. O seraphic virgin, show once again proof of thy power and of thy flaming charity, so that thy name shall ever be blessed and exalted; grant that we, having experienced thy most efficacious intercession here on earth, may come one day to thank thee in Heaven and enjoy eternal happiness with thee. Amen.

LA Schola sings Latin Mass
Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 5pm followed by refreshments
Music to include: Des Prez - Missa Pange Lingua Palestrina - Easter Anthems: Deus, Deus Meus Angelus Domini Benedicite gentes Terra tremuit
Singers: Gerry Craft, Stan DeWitt, Ashley Hoffman, Tim Morton, Hilary Fraser-Thomson, Rob Shacklett, Jay Tuttle & Audrey Wiechman
The Missa Pange Lingua is a musical setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by Franco-Flemish composer Josquin des Prez, probably dating from around 1515, near the end of his life. Most likely his last mass, it is an extended fantasia on the Pange Lingua hymn, and is one of Josquin's most famous mass settings.
Pange Lingua Gloriosi Corporis Mysterium is a hymn written by St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) for the Feast of Corpus Christi (now called the Solemnity of the Holy Body and Blood of Christ). It is also sung on Holy Thursday, during the procession from the church to the place where the Blessed Sacrament is kept until Good Friday. The last two stanzas, called separately Tantum Ergo, are sung at Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The hymn expresses the doctrine of transubstantiation, in which, according to the Roman Catholic faith, the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ.
Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c.1525-1594) was an Italian Renaissance composer and the most well-known 16th-century representative of the Roman School of musical composition. Palestrina became famous through his output of sacred music. He had an enormous influence on the development of Roman Catholic church music, and his work has often been seen as the culmination of Renaissance polyphony. It is only recently, with the discovery and publication of a great deal of hitherto unknown or forgotten music by various Renaissance composers, that we have had the means to properly assess Palestrina in historical context. These Easter Anthems are all quite short (each about 2-3 minutes in length). We would like to take the opportunity to sing more than one at a time, during the Mass Proper, at Introit and Offertory. |

USC / AIDS Lunch
Lunch prepared once a month
The LA County-USC AIDS Lunch Program was begun in 1991 by a group from University Synagogue in West L.A. Their vision was to provide a healthful lunch for the many patients who had to spend most of their day at the 5P21 Outpatient Clinic, Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, waiting for treatment and medication. Many of the HIV-infected outpatients who have turned to LAC-USC for aid are indigent and/or homeless. The hospital is not able to provide meals for patients at the outpatient clinic, and yet many of them must wait for hours for appointments or procedures. In addition, many of the patients come to the clinic by public transportation, and cannot easily go back and forth to their homes. The University Synagogue group solicited the assistance of other synagogues and Episcopal churches to ensure a lunch was provided, free of charge, for patients every day the clinic was open.
Since 1993, Saint Thomas has been active in this program. On the fourth Monday of every month, volunteers gather in the parish hall kitchen to make sandwiches, salads and desserts, which are then delivered to the clinic and served to the waiting patients and their families. We serve between 70 to 120 lunches each visit.
Saint Thomas Parish participates in the lunch program offered for patients of the AIDS outpatient clinic at County/USC Hospital in downtown LosAngeles. The program is one of Saint Thomas'outreach programs. For more information visit our website. |
