Greetings!
St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world. |
Rector's Corner
From the Rector
Fr. Ian Elliott Davies |
In this period immediately following Easter you will notice that we are celebrating together baptisms and marriages - the more 'upbeat' of our liturgies. But we are also participating in the annual Holocaust Memorial Service at Temple Israel of Hollywood as well as conducting the Requiem Mass and funeral rites of the late Mr James Marsland, RIP. These decidedly more contemplative liturgies remind us that life is mortal, humanity cannot bear too much reality (as Mr Eliot famously reminded us) and that we are lost if we fail to seek God's guiding grace in this fractured world. Our identity as a community of faith draws inspiration from the fact that we are a people with an immensely long historical [Judeo-Christian] perspective that is decisively shaped by the words and the gestures of Christ- the 'body language of God.' His story was able to relate Jew and Gentile, slave and free, male and female. His sacramental Presence brings unity to the Church and hope to our world. During this extended celebration of the Easter season
I send my love & prayers, Fr Ian Elliott Davies |
St. Anselm
April 21, 1033
Statue of St. Anselm |
Anselm of Canterbury (c. 1033 - 21 April 1109) was an Italian, a Benedictine monk, a philosopher, and a prelate of the church who held the office of Archbishop of Canterbury from 1093 to 1109. Called the founder of scholasticism, he is famous in the West as the originator of the ontological argument for the existence of God. In 1720, Anselm was recognized as a saint by Pope Clement XI.
The anniversary of Anselm's death on 21 April is celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church, much of the Anglican Communion, and in the Lutheran Church, as Anselm's memorial.
He was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1720 by Pope Clement XI, though he was never formally canonized. On 21 April 1909, 800 years after his death, Pope Pius X issued an encyclical "Communium Rerum", praising Anselm, his ecclesiastical career, and his writings. His symbol in hagiography is the ship, representing the spiritual independence of the church. Recently, Saint Anselm College, named after Saint Anselm himself, held a massive celebration commemorating the 900th anniversary of Anselm's death.

Guardian Society of St. Thomas
Join the Society!
The Guardian Society of St. Thomas the Apostle Hollywood was been formed to recognize those persons who have made a documented planned gift directly to the Parish Endowment Fund.
Members of the Guardian Society have a vision beyond this life and have made provisions for the continuing financial support of our beloved Parish. Thus they have become a guardian angel over future generations of Christians in this place. In 1930 the cornerstone of our beautiful Church was laid, and it seems fitting that in the 75th anniversary year of the beginning construction of the Parish Church, we embarked on building a secure future for generations to come.
The Guardian Society offers each of us as Christian stewards the opportunity to share our resources through a planned gift of any size and a person automatically becomes a member when he/she makes a provosion for St. Thomas the Apostle Parish through some sort of gift. The Parish Office has a Disclosure Form which offers a convenient way to confidentially record the provision one has made.
By Vestry policy, a bequest or planned gift received by the Parish will not be spent, but invested in the Endowment Fund. The corpus (body) of the Fund will never be spent, but only the earnings of the investment will be used for annual ministry needs.

On April 18 in 1161, Theobald, Archbishop of Canterbury, died. He repeatedly quarreled with his superiors about church appointments and other political questions, but the influential French abbot Bernard of Clairvaux supported him. Theobald helped strengthen the English church and build the career of Thomas Becket, whom he recommended as chancellor to England's newly crowned King Henry. |
