Greetings!

St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.  We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.

Welcome to the Great Fifty Days of Easter! The Great Fifty Days are like an extended Lord's Day (Sunday) during which, traditionally, there can be no fasting- in some traditions there is no confession of sin in the liturgy- everyone having been to make their confessions during Lent and Holy Week, of course. In this Parish we tend to spend a lot of time and energy focusing on Lent-the Great Forty Days. Each year we solemnly keep Ash Wednesday and are invited "to the observance of an holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance by prayer, fasting, and self denial and by reading and meditating on God's Holy Word." We place a great deal of emphasis on Lent and on the particular practices of Lent (like fasting, study courses and confession), and we have special programs and liturgies. And this is appropriate. The Great Forty days of Lent are an important season of self-reflection, correction and preparation for Easter.

Easter Sunday comes, however, and we tend to see it as the conclusion of Lent and not as the beginning of Easter. It is important to note that the Great Fifty Days are the Season of Easter, not the Season after Easter. This means that our celebration of Easter is not reserved to one day, Easter Day, but is celebrated over an extended period of fifty days. Since the beginnings of the Christian Church and tradition, the Great Fifty Days from Easter to the Feast of Pentecost have been a time of rejoicing and feasting-a time for receiving, celebrating, and living thankfully for the wonderful gift of forgiveness, grace and new life freely offered through God in Our Lord Jesus Christ. I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all who have made this year's Easter so memorable and enjoyable.

I send my love & prayers,

Joy Jakubowski

Joy Jakubowski
Joy was born into a Mormon family, flirted with paganism and then settled in for a chronic bout of agnosticism before being drawn to St. Thomas. With the inspiration and support of both clergy and choir she joined the Catechumen Class of '09, from which she graduated both moistened (baptized!) and slapped (confirmed). In addition to singing in the choir, Joy plays the cello. In no particular order, Joy enjoys travel, books, chocolate, music, and her dog, Ardala.

Prelude:
'Adagio' from Symphony III
Camille Saint-Sans

Postlude:
'Allegro Maestoso' from Symphony III
Camille Saint-Sans - (world premier adaptation for organ)

A stable in the symphonic literature the Symphony No. III (also know as the Organ Symphony) is without a doubt the most well known piece for orchestra and organ. Saint-Sans knowledge of orchestral writing and his ability as an organist marry these two sometimes disparate elements in a way that is convincing, satisfying and thrilling.Of composing the work Saint-Sans said that he had "given everything to it I was able to give."

Although the Adagio has been transcribed for the organ the Allegro Maestoso has not. After having searched and searched for a transcription and needing to play part of it for Darcine's wedding the evening prior, I present to you my rendition of the middle and end of this powerful movement.

Readings:
Acts 5.27-32
Psalm 118.14-end or Psalm 150
Revelation 1.4-8
John 20.19-end
Congratulations!

Darcine Thomas and Howard March will be joined together in Holy Matrimony on Saturday, April 10, 2010.  The 7:30pm service will be officiated by Fr. Ian Elliott Davies and Rabbi John Rosove from Temple Israel.  All are welcome to witness this wonderful event.

Mother Knows Best

On April 13 in 1534, Sir Thomas More, Lord Chancellor of England, refused to take the oath to the English succession. One year later Henry VIII indicted him for treason and had him beheaded.
