Dear Parishioner
St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.
This coming Sunday of Christ the King marks the end of the Church year and the official conclusion of our Parish's 2010 Every Member Canvas and Pledge Campaign "Be Strong in the Lord." During the Masses the Team Captains will bring forward the pledges to be blessed at the altar. If you have not returned your pledge card yet, please do so as soon as possible in order for it to be included with the others on Sunday. Deepest appreciation is extended to the Team Captains and Team Members who have worked diligently this Fall and to every member of the Parish who has so faithfully committed to supporting our important ministry at St. Thomas during these challenging times.
Stewardship 2010: Christ the Rock Almight God, whose loving hand has given us all that we possess: Grant us grace that we may honor You with our substance and being strong in You and in the Power ofYour might, be faithful stewards of Your bounty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. |
Christ the King |
The Feast of Christ the King (or properly, the Solemnity of Christ the King) is a holy day in the liturgical calendar of the Roman Catholic Church, and also some Protestant churches. Prior to 1970, the feast was observed on the last Sunday in October; however, the reformed calendar approved by the Second Vatican Council that took effect in that year changed the date to the last Sunday before the next liturgical year's Advent begins (Advent marking the start of the liturgical year). Before this change, the Sunday before Advent bore the designation "Last Sunday After Pentecost" and had its own special Mass.
White vestments are worn at Masses on this Sunday, rather than the green that prevails during the rest of Ordinary Time, except for those observances (solemnities or feasts) that call for either white or red. Adapted from www.wikipedia.com | |
Book Discussion on Tuesdays |
Harold S. Kushner's book, The Lord Is My Shepherd - Healing Wisdom of the Twenty-Third Psalm, is our source for a five week study exploring one of the most familiar and intriguing portions of Scripture. In the midst of difficulty people of faith have turned to these powerful verses for comfort and support. Journey with us as we try to find the source of its power and enduring witness.
Steven DeMuth, a candidate for the seminary, leads the book discussion. The discussion meets on Tuesdays after Mass (7:30pm) and will go from November 17 to December 15. You may purchase the book at Amazon or any other retailer. |
Sponsorship available for Advent Wreath |
Sponsorship for the Advent Wreath is available. The Wreath itself is $100 for the season and sponsorship of each candle (4 total) is just $25. Please contact the office if you are interested. |
Millions Showing & Potluck tonight |
The UK is about to switch its currency from Pounds to Euros, giving a gang a chance to rob the poorly-secured train loaded with money on its way to incineration. But, during the robbery, one of the big bags falls literally from the sky on Damian's playhouse, a 5-year old given to talking to saints. The boy then starts seeing what the world and the people around him are made of. Ethics, being human and the soul all come to the forefront in this filmis today and where it wants to be in the future. Fr. Ian Elliot Davies will lead the discussion.
The movie starts at 7:30 and the St. Martin's guild pot luck starts at 7:00. If you plan to attend, bringing some kind of munchie dish to share would be appreciated.

Coffee Hour Help Needed |
The Hospitality Committee is looking for volunteers to help set up and clean up after the coffee hour on Sundays. They would like four to six volunteers so a schedule can be set up and no one person has to work more than once a month. The coffee hour is an important part in our Parish fellowship allowing us to get to know each other better. Your participation can help keep this essential part of Parish life running smoothly. Please contact John Boughner, Les Rumsey or the Parish Office if you are interested. |
Communion & H1N1 |
In response to the H1N1 Flu (commonly known as the Swine Flu), St. Thomas Hollywood encourages parishioners to partake of communion via intinction. (The Sacred Minister will dip the host into the wine and place the consecrated host on the parishioners tongue, which should be extended.)
For those parishioners who out of custom prefer to continue using the chalice, the chalice is cleaned with a grain-alcohol cloth after each use, significantly reducing any transfer of germs.
We are mindful of the sensitivity of certain people to these issues, and we would kindly remind you that receiving just the Sacred Host is full Communion. You do not have to receive the Chalice, and vice-versa: receiving only the Chalice is full Communion.
Common sense will be one of our best weapons against this flu:
- Wash hands early and often, and use appropriate sanitizers. Please use the dispensers that are placed around the Church grounds.
- If you feel sick, stay home as an act of grace to others.
- If you have a family member sick, keep that person home for the same reason.
- Get your information from trustworthy sources: the CDC, local public health, or your health care provider.

Thanksgiving Dinner for family in need |
The Stewardship of Community Outreach is sponsoring a family for Thanksgiving Dinner through Women at Risk. Five children- ages 1, 5, 7, 9 and 17. They have NO income to provide for the family and are in desperate need. We are currently collecting donations of Ralph's Club Gift Cards that will be given to the family so that they have a meal this Thanksgiving. Please contact Kaye McKlaine at 310-709-9424 and give the Gift Cards to Kaye by this Sunday. God Bless. |
The Reason for the Season |
St. Thomas' Stewardship of Community Outreach is launching a food drive to benefit SOVA food pantries this holiday season. The goal this year is to fill the SOVA food bin twice during the holidays, once before Thanksgiving and once before Christmas. The food bin is located in the foyer near the church office during the week and will be in the recreation hall during coffee hour on Sundays throughout the holidays. The following items are needed:
Canned and packaged foods
- Personal hygiene products (especially disposable razors, shampoo, soap, feminine hygiene items, disposable diapers and deodorant)
- Ribbon and other basket-making equipment and supplies for Baskets of Hope
- New or gently used children's books
SOVA is a nonsectarian program of Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles, dedicated to alleviating hunger and poverty in the community through food distribution and offering a wide range of supportive services.
Three SOVA food pantries provide free groceries and supportive resources to 7,000 individuals each month. SOVA participants represent our community's diverse cultures, faiths and ethnicities. Volunteers respond to each person's needs, respecting their dignity, individuality and privacy. With extraordinary community support and a service approach that has been described as "the model for food assistance in the future," SOVA has been providing outstanding community service for 25 years.
SOVA also needs volunteers and assistance in linking with manufacturers and distributors as sources of large quantity donations. Also if you or someone you know are in need, please contact SOVA at 818-988-7682 or visit their website at www.http://www.jfsla.org/sova/ for eligibility requirements, locations and times of pantry operation. |
Bishop responds to Vatican Offer |
November 16, 2009 Bishop Christopher Epting, Deputy for Ecumenical and Interreligious Relations of The Episcopal Church, has issued the following:
Now that the full text of the Vatican's "Apostolic Constitution" dealing with certain former Anglicans who wish to become Roman Catholics has been released, it is clear that what is being touted by some as an 'ecumenical gesture' may be understood as 'pastoral' but is not necessarily very ecumenical. Even though Cardinal Walter Kasper has now given one newspaper interview, there has otherwise been a noticeable silence on the part of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity on this matter. This appears to be a unilateral action on the part of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith which flies in the face of the slow, but steady progress made in the real ecumenical dialogue of over forty years.
This is "come home to Rome" with absolute clarity. Any former Anglican who has been ordained will not only have to be re-ordained as a priest in the Roman Catholic Church, not only re-ordained as a transitional deacon, but even re-confirmed as an adult member of the Body of Christ! Any one who does make this move is not an Anglican, nor an Anglo-Catholic, but a Roman Catholic convert.
As we have said on numerous occasions, we commend with our blessing any Anglican who in good conscience wishes to become a Roman Catholic just as we welcome any Roman Catholic who in good conscience wishes to enter into full communion with the Anglican Communion. But these decisions are to be made as individuals not as communities of persons. The Vatican may rest assured that we will never create "Roman Catholic Ordinariates" within the Anglican Communion for former, disaffected Roman Catholic converts. We will continue to welcome individuals, from the Roman Catholic Church or any other Christian communion, who desire to be in full communion with the See of Canterbury, and therefore with the Anglican Communion.
For our part, The Episcopal Church remains committed to genuine, ecumenical dialogue both on the national (Anglican - Roman Catholic Consultation in the USA) and international (Anglican - Roman Catholic International Commission) levels. We are encouraged by Cardinal Walter Kasper's comment in Osservatore Romano on November 15 that these will, of course, continue. The recent "Apostolic Constitution" is a distraction, but likely only a minor one, from the real goal of ecumenical conversation between the largest (Roman Catholic) and third largest (Anglican) Christian communion in the world. Thanksgiving |
 |
Thanksgiving Day is a harvest festival. Traditionally, it is a time to give thanks for the harvest and express gratitude in general. It is a holiday celebrated primarily in Canada and the United States. While perhaps religious in origin, Thanksgiving is now primarily identified as a secular holiday. The date and location of the first Thanksgiving celebration is a topic of modest contention. Though the earliest attested Thanksgiving celebration was on September 8, 1565 in what is now Saint Augustine, Florida, the traditional "first Thanksgiving" is venerated as having occurred at the site of Plymouth Plantation, in 1621. The Plymouth celebration occurred early in the history in one of the original thirteen colonies that became the United States, and this celebration became an important part of the American myth by the 1800s.
On Thanksgiving Eve there will be a Vigil Style Mass held at 7:30pm.
On Thanksgiving Day there will be a Mass held at 7:00pm
Both Masses will be celebrated by Fr. Ian Elliott Davies.
The Office of St. Thomas the Apostle will be closed on Thursday & Friday November 26-27.
As many readers receive the eNews at their office email, next weeks eNews will launch into cyberspace on Wednesday, November 25. |

Angel Tree |
 |
It's Angel Tree time again! This year we are assisting the children of women living with AIDS through Women at Risk. St. Thomas has supported this organization for a number of years. The needs have quadrupled since last year, while their funding has decreased. This year we'll be assisting 64 families and 129 children. We had 20-30 children last year from this group. For these children, this will be the only present they receive.
The Angel Tree will be available this Sunday, November 22nd, and the gifts should be returned by Sunday, December 13th.
Last year we started giving a gift to the mothers as well. This year, the families desperately need food for their tables, so, if you are able, we are also collecting grocery gift cards. There will be a sign-up sheet under the tree.
Thank you for your generosity! |

Interesting facts about
St. Thomas the Apostle |
The beautiful lanterns in our Church were custom made to the design of the architect. Today they would fetch a very high price in any antique lighting shop. We are very blessed to have them. |
Julian Sands reads Harold Pinter's Poetry |
|
English Actor and St. Thomas Parishioner Julian Sands is best known for his work in such films as Oxford Blues, The Killing Fields, A Room with a View and Leaving Las Vegas. He became familiar with Harold Pinter's poems a few years ago. Pinter had committed to a reading of his poetry to benefit a women's shelter, but his illness had temporarily impaired his speaking voice and he asked Julian to take over. They worked together as Julian was instructed and tutored in Pinter's phrasing, emphases and, of course, his pauses.
For two performances only (29 Nov. 5pm & 9 Dec. 8pm), Julian will be presenting these poems on stage at the Odyssey Theatre. The evening will include observations and appreciations of his time spent with Pinter.
Tickets are only $20, and half of the proceeds will go to the St. Thomas Parish Homeless Breakfast fund. For tickets, click here
