Dear Parishioner

St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.  We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.

Leo the Great (November 10)

Pope LeoPope Leo I, or Pope Saint Leo the Great (ca. 400-10 November 461), was pope from 29 September 440 to 10 November 461.  He was an Italian aristocrat, and is the earliest pope of the Roman Catholic Church to have received the title "the Great". He is perhaps best known for having met Attila the Hun outside Rome in 452, persuading him to turn back from his invasion of Western Europe. He is also a Doctor of the Church.

Leo I (440-461) and Gregory I (590-604) are the only two bishops of Rome commonly called "the Great." Leo, at a time when the capital of the Empire had been moved to Constantinople, and the government even in Italy no longer had its headquarters at Rome, was the most important official in the city. To him fell such prosaic tasks as supervising the distribution of grain imports and reorganizing the municipal fire department. When Attila and the Huns invaded Italy in 452, he negotiated their withdrawal, and when Gaiseric (or Genseric) the Vandal captured Rome three years later, it was Leo who prevented the total destruction of the city. It is perhaps not surprising that the theory of papal supremacy gained much ground in his day.

In his day there were disgreements about the correct way to state the truth that Jesus Christ is both God and man. In 449 Leo wrote a letter (known as the Tome of Leo) to Bishop Flavian of Constantinople, in which he affirmed that Christ has two Natures in one Person. The letter was read in 451 by the Council of Chalcedon (the fourth Ecumenical Council), and judged by them to be sound doctrine. It contributed much to the creedal statements of that council.

Leo's influence on church government will naturally get mixed reviews. But for his defense of the belief that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, all Christians may thank God.

From a sermon by Leo the Great

Although the universal Church of God is constituted of distinct orders of members, still, in spite of the many parts of its holy body, the Church subsists as an integral whole, just as the Apostle says: we are all one in Christ. . .
For all, regenerated in Christ, are made kings by the sign of the cross; they are consecrated priests by the oil of the Holy Spirit, so that beyond the special service of our ministry as priests, all spiritual and mature Christians know that they are a royal race and are sharers in the office of the priesthood. For what is more king-like that to find yourself ruler over your body after having surrendered your soul to God? And what is more priestly than to promise the Lord a pure conscience and to offer him in love unblemished victims on the altar of one's heart?

Book Discussion continues at 9:15am

Power and PassionEach Sunday at 9:15am there is a Book Discussion on Samuel Wells' book "Power & Passion."  The book looks at the passion of Christ by examining 6 different characters: Pontius Pilate, Barabbas, Joseph of Arimathea, Pilate's Wife, Peter and Mary Magdalene.

"Power & Passion" was chosen by the Archbishop of Canterbury as his Lent book for 2007, but it is a book that can be shared any time we need to reconsider our own power in the light of the power of Jesus' resurrection and allow our own passion to be renewed by the passion of Christ.
The book discussion will be held on Sunday's from 9:15am to 9:45am in the Small Parish Hall.

Shireen Baker, a candidate for the seminary, leads the book discussion.  You may purchase the book at Amazon or any other retailer.
Book Discussion starting Tuesday, Nov. 17

Lord is my Sheperd

Harold S. Kushner's book, The Lord Is My Shepherd - Healing Wisdom of the Twenty-Third Psalm, will be our source for a five week study exploring one of the most familiar and intriguing portions of Scripture. In the midst of difficulty people of faith have turned to these powerful verses for comfort and support. Journey with us as we try to find the source of its power and enduring witness.

Steven DeMuth, a candidate for the seminary, leads the book discussion.  The discussion meets on Tuesdays after Mass (7:30pm) and will go from November 19 to December 15.  You may purchase the book at Amazon or any other retailer.
Coffee Hour Help Needed

The Hospitality Committee is looking for volunteers to help set up and clean up after the coffee hour on Sundays. They would like four to six volunteers so a schedule can be set up and no one person has to work more than once a month.  The coffee hour is an important part in our Parish fellowship allowing us to get to know each other better.  Your participation can help keep this essential part of Parish life running smoothly. Please contact John Boughner, Les Rumsey or the Parish Office if you are interested.

November 15 is available for hosting Coffee Hour. If you have any questions contact John Boughner at 310 606 1503.

Communion & H1N1

H1N1In response to the H1N1 Flu (commonly known as the Swine Flu), St. Thomas Hollywood encourages parishioners to partake of communion via intinction.  (The Sacred Minister will dip the host into the wine and place the consecrated host on the parishioners tongue, which should be extended.)

For those parishioners who out of custom prefer to continue using the chalice, starting this Sunday the chalice will be cleaned with a grain-alcohol cloth after each use, significantly reducing any transfer of germs.

We are mindful of the sensitivity of certain people to these issues, and we would kindly remind you that receiving just the Sacred Host is full Communion. You do not have to receive the Chalice, and vice-versa: receiving only the Chalice is full Communion.

Common sense will be one of our best weapons against this flu:
  • Wash hands early and often, and use appropriate sanitizers.  Please use the dispensers that are placed around the Church grounds.
  • If you feel sick, stay home as an act of grace to others.
  • If you have a family member sick, keep that person home for the same reason.
  • Get your information from trustworthy sources: the CDC, local public health, or your health care provider.

Reaching out to the poor this holiday season

SOVA
St. Thomas' Stewardship of Community Outreach is launching a food drive to benefit SOVA food pantries this holiday season.  The goal this year is to fill the SOVA food bin twice during the holidays, once before Thanksgiving and once before Christmas.  The food bin is located in the foyer near the church office during the week and will be in the recreation hall during coffee hour on Sundays throughout the holidays.  The following items are needed:

Canned and packaged foods
  • Personal hygiene products (especially disposable razors, shampoo, soap, feminine hygiene items,  disposable diapers and  deodorant)
  • Ribbon and other basket-making equipment and supplies for Baskets of Hope
  • New or gently used children's books
SOVA is a nonsectarian program of Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles, dedicated to alleviating hunger and poverty in the community through food distribution and offering a wide range of supportive services.

Three SOVA food pantries provide free groceries and supportive resources to 7,000 individuals each month. SOVA participants represent our community's diverse cultures, faiths and ethnicities. Volunteers respond to each person's needs, respecting their dignity, individuality and privacy. With extraordinary community support and a service approach that has been described as "the model for food assistance in the future," SOVA has been providing outstanding community service for 25 years.

SOVA also needs volunteers and assistance in linking with manufacturers and distributors as sources of large quantity donations.  Also if you or someone you know are in need, please contact SOVA at 818-988-7682 or visit their website at www.http://www.jfsla.org/sova/ for eligibility requirements, locations and times of pantry operation.

Veteran's Day
Holloway Park and Veterans Memorial
The City of West Hollywood will host its 8th Annual Veterans Day Ceremony at Holloway Park and Veterans Memorial Park (8459 1/2 Santa Monica Blvd) at 11am.

The Rector, Fr. Ian Elliott Davies, and Vietnam Veteran & Parishioner, Andy Harland will be participating at this special event.

This special ceremony will include a fly-over and demonstration
by four U.S. Army Black Hawk Helicopters, precisely at 11AM, and a special re-dedication of the park's name to the
Sal Guarriello Veterans Memorial Park in
honor of the City's late Councilmember.
The Park is located at the intersection of Holloway Drive and Santa Monica Boulevard.
The design maximizes green space while incorporating the components honoring veterans planned in the original design including four flagpoles, a row of shields commemorating the five branches of the United States Armed Forces, a dedication plaque and poetry selected by former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky.
Approximately 7,000 square feet of landscaping such as Redwood and Laurel trees, grasses and shrubs highlights the park, along with benches and decomposed granite walkways.

Interesting facts about
St. Thomas the Apostle

Doubt
The first priest in charge (vicar) of St. Thomas before it was a parish was Fr. A.L. Randall. He began St. Thomas association with the
entertainment industry. He was the Los Angeles representative of the
The Actors' Church Alliance. This brought forth generous donations to the growing church from many actors and actresses.

Millions
The UK is about to switch its currency from Pounds to Euros, giving a gang a chance to rob the poorly-secured train loaded with money on its way to incineration. But, during the robbery, one of the big bags falls literally from the sky on Damian's playhouse, a 5-year old given to talking to saints. The boy then starts seeing what the world and the people around him are made of. Ethics, being human and the soul all come to the forefront in this filmis today and where it wants to be in the future.

Fr. Ian Elliot Davies will lead the discussion.
