Dear Parishioner
St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.
Stewardship 2010: Christ the Rock
Almight God, whose loving hand has given us all that we possess: Grant us grace that we may honor You with our substance and being strong in You and in the Power ofYour might, be faithful stewards of Your bounty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. |
Blessing of the Animals |
As autumn arrives, people in various places may notice something odd. A procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses, is led to churches for a special ceremony called the Blessing of Pets. This custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi's love for all creatures. Francis, whose feast day is October 4th, loved the larks flying about his hilltop town. He and his early brothers, staying in a small hovel, allowed themselves to be displaced by a donkey.
Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God's living things. "All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures." And there was testimony in the cause for St. Clare of Assisi's canonization that referred to her little cat! That there are today over 62 million cats in the U.S. attests to the continuing affection we have for our furry, feathered or finned friends. We've even had a cat called Socks in the White House. Other popular presidential pets range from Abraham Lincoln's Fido to Lyndon Johnson's beagles, named Him and Her.
For single householders, a pet can be a true companion. Many people arrive home from work to find a furry friend overjoyed at their return. Many a senior has a lap filled with a purring fellow creature. The bond between person and pet is like no other relationship, because the communication between fellow creatures is at its most basic. Eye-to-eye, a man and his dog, or a woman and her cat, are two creatures of love. No wonder people enjoy the opportunity to take their animal companions to church for a special blessing. Church is the place where the bond of creation is celebrated. At Franciscan churches, a friar with brown robe and white cord often welcomes each animal with a special prayer. The Blessing of Pets usually goes like this: "Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen."
As the prayer is offered, the pet is gently sprinkled with holy water. Believe it or not, most pets receive this sacramental spritz with dignity, though I must admit I have seen some cats flatten their ears a bit as the drops of water lightly pelt them. But the owner is happy, and who knows what spiritual benefits may result? Usually the Blessing of Pets is held outdoors. But I remember it rained one year, and all were invited inside St. Stephen's Church in Manhattan. It was quite a sight to see pairs of creatures-one human, one animal-sitting in the pews. The pastor joined right in with his beagle. Noah's Ark was never like this! Some people criticize the amount and cost of care given to pets. People are more important, they say. Care for poor people instead of poodles. And certainly our needy fellow humans should not be neglected. However, I believe every creature is important. The love we give to a pet, and receive from a pet, can draw us more deeply into the larger circle of life, into the wonder of our common relationship to our Creator. By: Kevin E. Mackin, O.F.M., a Franciscan of the Holy Name Province

St. Thomas the Apostle 2010 |
From the Clergy & Vestry
2010 for St. Thomas is a year of transition into an exciting new vision for the Parish. As we adapt to this new vision, our calling as Anglicans shall ground and center us as we move forward. In a time of uncertainty about the future and how we will be able to cope with the myriad of pressures that challenge us, St. Paul reminds us to 'stand firm' to 'stand confidently' on Christ who is the Rock. Ephesians tells us there are seven founding unities from which believers may take courage (4:4-6) 'one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all.' In 2010 St. Thomas will be known as the leader in Anglo-Catholicism on the West Coast by our practice and our example. We shall faithfully educate ourselves and others in our liturgical ways. We shall continue to provide a range of Masses: Daily, Gregorian, Latin, Evensong, Low Sunday, High Sunday with Choir. In 2010 we shall innovate with a yearlong training program for seminarians. We will move from concept to practice with the launch of a Sunday School for our youth. We shall expand our Adult Education programs. We will regularly bring in renowned experts who will share their knowledge, lead services and conduct seminars during their visit. In 2010 we will continue our commitment to the sick and infirm. We will maintain our outreach to the homeless and those in need. We will educate and be given guidance with our local community in matters related to health, money and life management. In 2010 we will meet the Diocesan recommendations for salary for the Rector. We will provide additional hours for our Assistant Priest and Deacon. We will retain the highest quality of office personnel. We will continue our Christian responsibility of contribution to the Diocese. In 2010 our music liturgy will grow further under our Organist-in-Residence, his scholar and our Choirmaster providing for consistent excellence. We will fully fund our Choir and Music programs. In 2010 we will continue our commitment to being good stewards of our physical plant with continued commitment to environmental stewardship. We will continue the Acoustics project and will conduct a campus-wide needs assessment. In 2010 we ask you to stand firm with us as we stand firm with Christ. We ask you to maintain your pledge and increase it by 10% to meet our united vision. Please communicate with your Every Member Canvass partner and submit your pledge after prayerful consideration. With your love, prayers and generosity in 2010 we will continue to fulfill our mission being called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.

Book Discussion starts October 11 at 9:15am |
Starting October 11, 2009 at 9:15am will be a Book Discussion on Samuel Wells' book "Power & Passion." The book looks at the passion of Christ by examining 6 different characters: Pontius Pilate, Barabbas, Joseph of Arimathea, Pilate's Wife, Peter and Mary Magdalene.
"Power & Passion" was chosen by the Archbishop of Canterbury as his Lent book for 2007, but it is a book that can be shared any time we need to reconsider our own power in the light of the power of Jesus' resurrection and allow our own passion to be renewed by the passion of Christ.
The book discussion will be held on Sunday's from 9:15am to 9:45am in the Small Parish Hall.
Shireen Baker, a seminarian, will lead the book discussion. You may purchase the book at Amazon or any other retailer. |

This weeks Stewardship Meditation |
"Lord make us instruments of Thy peace." (St. Francis) This Sunday, October 4th is the Feast of St. Francis and the occasion of our annual Parish Blessing of the Animals. We love our animal companions who offer us so much and we practice stewardship in our care and treatment of them. Many of us have extended that love of God's special creatures in our lives to include a love for all of God's creation. St. Francis knew a life totally in tune with God's natural world, a precious gift to us. Christians are actually ecologists, because we know God created our earth and all its vast array of creatures and "saw that it was good." Proper stewardship involves how we care for all of God's natural world. As we consider our support for the ministry to St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, may we also live in the spirit of St. Francis actively caring for all that God has bestowed upon us. |

ePrayer List |
|
Again, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Matthew 18:18-20)
Prayer is at the center of our worship and binds us together as a community of faith. This week we commenced our electronic prayer chain email. A list of persons on the prayer list is sent weekly.
Subscribers to the prayer chain email agree to honor confidentiality of the members on the prayer list and to pray for the persons on the prayer list during the week. It is expected that the prayer chain will be sent weekly, though occasional additional emails will be sent if circumstances warrant.
The prayer chain email is an opt-in list only - it will not be sent unless you sign up for it. If you'd like to be on this distribution list, please update your profile (please use link at the bottom of the email, customized with your email)or contact the office. |
