Dear Parishioner
St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world. |
General Convention |
The 76th General Convention is completed, and thousands of Episcopalians have met, worshiped, deliberated, and worked together for the future of the Church.
Tens of thousands of conventioners descended upon Anaheim in the America's 2nd largest convention.
The Diocese of Los Angeles hosted the Convention. Each member Parish was asked to provide volunteers and St. Thomas responded tremendously!
From Sarah Hensley
I volunteered four days. My job was to be one of the Pages in the House of Bishops. Of course nothing that takes place on the floor can be discussed by me. However I can say that I am very impressed by the knowledge, efficiency, and fairness of our Presiding Bishop.
I sense a spirit of gracious welcoming to all our clergy, delegates, volunteers and guests. The atmosphere of cameraderie is quite remarkable.
Pray for all in the work of this gathering.
From Patricia Neil Jensen
http://www.episcopalchurch.org/elife is excellent for factual news about everything happening at the Convention. I recommend it to everyone. The reporters for that site and the newsletters associated with it are reporting in detail and every day about the response to resolution B033 and a myriad of other convention proposals and activities.
I have been a volunteer for 3 days. It has been a glorious experience. I wish you all could be there.
The first day I was sent to the ECW sessions and our task were pretty ordinary ("...pass this out!... run to the print shop and get more of these!..").
The second day, I was a Page in the House of Bishops which was a grand "promotion." The "legislative" activities are organized much like the Congress of the United States. The House of Deputies has representatives from all the Dioceses and functions like the House of Representatives. The House of Bishops is like the U.S. Senate. "Legislation" travels from Committees to each House and back and forth between the Houses. There is a woman named Frances who runs all the Volunteer activities in the House of Bishops. She is smart and tough and runs a tight ship which actually makes working there easy. The Presiding Bishop (the "PB" as she is referenced by those of us "in the know!") sits on a raised platform in the front of the room with members of her staff. A small group of experienced volunteers (some people travel to the National Conventions and volunteer and are there every time and every day) serve that group. In front of the "PB" are numbered tables where all Bishops are seated. This area is roped off and only Bishops or Pages assigned to that area can enter. The Press and other observers have chairs in the back and on one side. All communications to Bishops have to go to Frances first. She makes the sure document or request is acceptable and then hands it to one of the Pages. The document will then have a name and a number on a tag on the front. The Page goes to the numbered table and softly asks for the named Bishop. When s/he identifies him or herself, the Page hands over the document. I was fairly busy running around delivering documents but did hear some of the debates and conversation. The Archbishop of Canterbury had gone by the time I arrived, but, of course, Bishop Robinson and our beloved Bishop Bruno were among the assembled group.
Sunday morning, I was a volunteer at the Mass. There were 8,000 people in attendance and it was wonderful. 200 Bishops were in the procession and the Presiding Bishop celebrated and delivered an excellent sermon. As you can imagine, there were a lot of volunteer jobs! I helped usher and then took up collection in my section and, finally, helped people find the proper communion station. I met and visited with a woman from Louisiana who is in the National Altar Guild. She was delightful and I told her about D.C. (my cat who loves linen ironing) and we shared stories about the "fair linens."
http://www.episcopalchurch.org/81799_112390_ENG_HTM.htm contains a wonderful story about the service dogs being honored and trained to become companion animals for people in emotional or physical trouble. The service dogs often made appearances in the hallways and masses and meetings. They are being trained to do their jobs regardless of noise, music or activity in their surrounding area. The amazing benefits of this program will be no surprise to those of us who share our lives with furry companions. Just one of the interesting and amazing things happening in our Church.
Like all volunteer activities, I feel like the one who has really benefited. I have met terrific people and been able to serve some of those charged with leading our church in these times of trouble and promise. Blessings and Peace to you all!

General Convention - July 8 to 14 |

Let us pray As deputies and bishops of The Episcopal Church meet in Anaheim, California, for General Convention, please join with them in prayer for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
For General Convention God our Wisdom, who eternally makes all things new: encourage by your Holy Spirit those who prepare for General Convention to labor together for the building up of your world and your Church; counsel them when to act and when to wait; turn their hearts always toward those in greatest need, and away from their own preoccupations and fears; help them never forget that love and mercy are your greatest gifts given us all to offer one another as we see in them Jesus Christ who alone is our joy, our way, our truth, and our life. Amen.
For Participants God of light and life: As General Convention draws near, help me to continue to grow up in all ways into Christ. Fill me with energy for the work before me; show me your surprising face in the people around me; delight me afresh with the variety of your creation; inspire me with a vision of your justice becoming concrete in the world; and above all, teach me to love you and my neighbor more fully, less grudgingly, and with more forbearance day by day, and give me the grace of good humor, the leaven of laughter, and the tonic of hope through it all, in Jesus' name. Amen.
Commissioned by the General Convention Office and written by the Rev. Jennifer Phillips, vicar of St. Augustine's Church, Kingston, Rhode Island.

What Should I do at Mass? |
Arrive on time, open your heart to God in prayer before Mass begins.
Have your offerings ready: an open mind to be instructed, an open heart to receive love from God and give it to others, a clean conscience, and your sacrificial offering from the treasure God has given you.
Be attentive during the prayers, lections and sermon. God may have something to say to you today.
Lift up your heart at the offertory, and offer to God all that you have and all that you are.
Receive God in Holy Communion if you are prepared to do so, in any case adore Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.
Remain to the end of the of Mass, offer your proper thanksgiving for all the gifts God has given you. Each of us has received more than we could ever count.
If you go to the Parish Hall to the coffee hour, try to speak to strangers and visitors before your friends. When you speak to your friends, let love and Christian charity inform every comment you make. If others speak to you lacking such charity, change the subject or excuse yourself, and don't feel righteous - you have undoubtedly done the same before and will again.
Think what you can do this week to advance Our Lord's mission in and from your church. Is there work you could do? A weekday Mass or other service you could attend? Could you support or help the clergy or laity who have work to do this week? Everything, from being a church warden, to serving at Mass, silver polishing, washing and ironing linens, serving coffee hour, helping the office, feeding the homeless and weekday Mass attendance is a gift and an offering to God. Which have you done? Which could you do? Our lives in Christ should be lives of growth. Are you doing the same things you did a year ago, two years ago, ten years ago? Is our weekly offering at the same percentage of income that it was last year, two years ago, ten years ago? Or are we growing in faithfulness and being more fully converted every day to Christ and His Church?
Let what you have heard and received on Sunday morning inform and colour the rest of your week, and keep the rest of the Sabbath day holy.

Prayer Chain |
Again, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Matthew 18:18-20)
Prayer is at the center of our worship and binds us together as a community of faith. Starting next week an electronic prayer chain email will be distributed. A list of persons on the prayer list will be sent weekly.
Subscribers to the prayer chain email agree to honor confidentiality of the members on the prayer list and to pray for the persons on the prayer list during the week. It is expected that the prayer chain will be sent weekly, though occasional additional emails will be sent if circumstances warrant.

Come one, come all to St. Thomas the Apostle's Movie Night! This month's movie will be the Academy Award Winning Babette's Feast held on Friday, July 17, 2009.
Take the style of Ingmar Bergman, stir in some Lutheranism, add a dash of Guy De Maupassant, a pinch of Chekov (such a severe and forbidding brew!). Mix well with the grand cuisine of nineteenth century France and what do you have? Babette's Feast!
Food will be served, and a discussion will follow. What could be better than a little intellectual stimulation mixed with conviviality?
All are welcome - parishioners, friends of parishioners, children of parishioners, et al. We've even got a big screen! Mark your calendars and spread the word!
