Dear Parishioner
St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world. |
St. Peter & St. Paul (June 29) |
The Confession of Peter ("Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God") is commemorated on 18 January, and the Conversion of Paul (on the approach to Damascus) a week later on 25 January. On 29 June we commemorate the martyrdoms of both apostles. The date is the anniversary of a day around 258, under the Valerian persecution, when what were believed to be the remains of the two apostles were both moved temporarily to prevent them from falling into the hands of the persecutors.
The Scriptures do not record the deaths of Peter or Paul, or indeed any of the Apostles except for James the son of Zebedee (Acts 12:2), but they are clearly anticipated (see the readings below), and from an early date it has been said that they were martyred at Rome at the command of the Emperor Nero, and buried there. As a Roman citizen, Paul would probably have been beheaded with a sword. It is said of Peter that he was crucified head downward. The present Church of St Peter in Rome replaces earlier churches built on the same site going back to the time of the Emperor Constantine, in whose reign a church was built there on what was believed to be the burial site of Peter. Excavations under the church suggest that the belief is older than Constantine.
St. Augustine writes (Sermon 295):
Both apostles share the same feast day, for these two were one; and even though they suffered on different days, they were as one. Peter went first, and Paul followed. And so we celebrate this day made holy for us by the apostles' blood. Let us embrace what they believed, their life, their labors, their sufferings, their preaching, and their confession of faith.Written by James Kiefer from www.MissionStClare.com |
General Convention Issues |
The General Convention of The Episcopal Church (TEC) considers a wide range of issues at each of its triennial meetings, and the July 8 - 17, 2009 gathering in Anaheim, California, will be no exception.
Issues are brought forth in the form of resolutions that come from bishops, deputies, diocesan conventions, provincial synods, and the committees, commissions and boards that help to carry out the work of the Church between meetings of General Convention.
Worship and liturgy · A report titled Rachel's Tears, Hannah's Hopes: Liturgies and Prayers for Healing from Loss Related to Childbearing and Childbirth. · Holy Women, Holy Men, an overhaul of Lesser Feasts and Fasts, which would add a number of names to the Calendar of the Church Year. · New prayers for: artists and writers; the Virgin Mary; care of God's creation; on the occasion or anniversary of a disaster; prophetic witness in the church and society; reconciliation and forgiveness; and scientists and environmentalists. · Consideration of requests for authorization to develop rites of blessing for same-gender unions, especially in states that have legalized such unions or marriages. · Use of gender-neutral language for prayer book marriage services; creation of an Episcopal Relief and Development Sunday; liturgical materials for a new Creation Cycle to be celebrated during the season after Pentecost.
Economic justice issues · Establishing a program to help alleviate poverty within the United States in such areas as Appalachia and federal reservations for Native Americans and increased ministry to native peoples. · Formation of an economic justice ministry for and with lower-income people, involving a system of local partnerships with agencies that work with the poor, as well as increased advocacy, empowerment and community-development work. · Increased efforts to combat racism within the Church. · Increased advocacy with the govern-ments of the United States and other countries to combat poverty and disease, support human rights, and promote scientifically-backed environmental policies. Global concerns/Anglican Communion · Support for the Millennium Development Goals, which General Convention 2006 established as a mission priority for the last triennium. · Crises and peacemaking efforts in conflict areas such as the Middle East, Sudan, Sri Lanka and the Great Lakes region of Africa. · The proposed Anglican covenant. The text was referred for further refinement by the Anglican Consultative Council at its May meeting, and as a result, formal adoption of the document can not be considered; however, resolutions on this topic may be submitted for consideration. · Requests to overturn, nullify or supersede GC06 Resolution B033, which called for restraint in electing or approving the election as bishops of candidates "whose manner of life presents a challenge to the wider church and will lead to further strains on communion." Ecumenical and interreligious relations · Proposals for immediate full communion with the Moravian Church and beginning a process towards full communion with the (Lutheran) Church of Sweden.

Gordon's House |
To honor the memory of the Reverend Canon Gordon B. Yeaton, Jr., "Gordon's House" is a collaborative youth service project in conjunction with the L.A. Diocese and Habitat for Humanity of Orange County at the 76th General Convention.
We lost Gordon in 2007 but can all join together now to honor his legacy of giving by building a home in his memory for a deserving family.
Gordon Yeaton was a passionate priest, teacher, activist, volunteer, artist and friend to many. Deeply moved by the work of Habitat for Humanity, Yeaton joined the Orange County board and coordinated an all-clergy build in 2003.
Youth and adult volunteers will frame the home on July 10 and 11 during General Convention; then the frame will be transported to its permanent site in Westminster, Calif. where it will be completed.
St. Thomas the Apostle Stewardship of Outreach & Community Committee will match every dollar donated to this cause by St. Thomas Parishioners, up to $250. Please submit your donation to the Church Office noting "Gordon's House" in the memo field. Thank you! |
Catechumenate 2009-10 |
In the early Church, those seeking to become Christians through the Sacrament of Baptism were enrolled in a process of preparation lasting from 2 - 3 years culminating with the Great Liturgy of the Easter Vigil at which time they were brought into the fullness of the Christian Faith. This process based on the Catechism of Christian teachings was known as the Catechumenate. Here at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish we have restored the Catechumenate for the modern time and as such have been recognized by Bishop Bruno as a leader in adult Christian formation in the Diocese of Los Angeles. Our Catechumenate is a strict commitment of nine months ending at Easter Vigil with the visitation of one of our Bishops. Our Catechumens are comprised of those new to the faith who are not baptized, those who are baptized but not confirmed, those who wish to be received from other communions with Apostolic Succession, and Episcopalians wishing to renew their baptismal vows. The process involves not just a didactic approach to Christian belief, but also dialog, discussion and active participation in exploring a vibrant, meaningful, and personal faith expressed in the community of our Parish. We are now in the process of forming the next Catechumenate for 2009 - 2010 which will begin on July 12th. If anyone is interested in knowing more, or wishes to be enrolled please contact the office to make an appointment to see Fr. Davies. |

Come one, come all to St. Thomas the Apostle's Movie Night! This month's movie will be the Academy Award Winning Babette's Feast held on Friday, July 17, 2009.
Take the style of Ingmar Bergman, stir in some Lutheranism, add a dash of Guy De Maupassant, a pinch of Chekov (such a severe and forbidding brew!). Mix well with the grand cuisine of nineteenth century France and what do you have? Babette's Feast!
Food will be served, and a discussion will follow. What could be better than a little intellectual stimulation mixed with conviviality?
All are welcome - parishioners, friends of parishioners, children of parishioners, et al. We've even got a big screen! Mark your calendars and spread the word! |

Interesting facts about
St. Thomas the Apostle |
The chalice and paten that are used in the Lady Chapel for Daily Mass (MWF at 8am, TTh at 7pm) have an interesting history. One night the 7th rector, Fr. Barbour, had just finished mass when there was a knock on the sacristy door. He answered it and found a man who said he was a Roman Catholic priest but he was leaving the priesthood. The chalice and paten had been give to him when he was ordained. He had heard of Fr. Barbour and the work he was doing at St. Thomas with AIDS ministry and he wanted these prized possessions of his to go on in the service of God. He therefore was donating them to St. Thomas. |
