"Through the Eyes of an Immigrant"
2012 Summer Youth Leaders (Left to Right: Andrew Yeung, Xinting Lan, Carmen Lin, Celine Kuan) |
| |
On August 3, 2012, members of the CPC Volunteer & Internship Program (VIP) hosted an improvisation workshop and performance based on the Model Minority Myth called "Through The Eyes of an Immigrant".
The most recent component of the VIP is the Summer Youth Leadership Program. Summer Youth Leaders are high school interns selected from CPC's Volunteer CORE (the volunteer program component of the VIP). On top of working with the college interns on the 2012 Walkathon & Family Day Fair, the Summer Youth Leaders were tasked with directing and producing a play with the other 70 high school summer volunteers.
After a discussion around the PEW Research Center's "Rise of Asian Americans" Report, the volunteers and Summer Youth Leaders wanted to do something in response to the report. They wanted to show the general public that reports and statistics does not depict an entire population and to encourage their peers to be who they want to be and not someone restricted by social constraints.
The improvisational workshop "But Did You Know?" was a performance centered around the Model Minority Myth. Audience participation contributed to the personalities of the characters and were juxtaposed with the findings from the Pew Research and statistics researched by the Summer Youth Leaders.

The second skit, "The Amazing Butterfly Man", was based off of Marvel Comics' popular character Spiderman, as we watch the different pressures of society take effect on Peter Chen's maturation into adulthood.
Special thanks go out to the Museum of Chinese in America for letting us use their space. Cross Culture Tours for the raffle prize donation of 2 eight day Beijing Tour tickets, and Bubbly Tea for their donation of 40 cups of bubble tea. |
