CPC Workforce Development Division Expands Career Center Services

$100,000 Grant to CPC WDD

CPC Workforce Development Division recently received a grant of $100,000 from the New York State Department of State to provide career advising, job readiness training and job placement assistance to low-income job seekers.  On Monday December 19th, 2011, Cesar A. Perales, the New York State Secretary of State, held a press conference at 165 Eldridge Street kicking off this new initiative and announced that the New York Department of State (DOS) is providing more than $2 million in Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) Workforce Development Grants to 21 communities across New York, with 10 downstate recipients. CPC Workforce Development Division was one of the chosen agencies to receive this funding in the downstate area.  This will be a 10 month contract and we are proposing to provide services to over 200 clients.  When touring 165 Eldridge Street, the Secretary of State mentioned that he was impressed with our proposed model of intake, career advising, job readiness and job placement services and hopes that many people in our community will benefit from this program.

Secretary Perales mentioned this funding will go directly to the communities that needed it the most and provide them with vital resources and services that can help them find jobs in this tough economy. Furthermore, able to provide millions of New Yorkers who are not fluent in English with the ability to learn English which will be instrumental in their employment. Secretary Perales was proud that they are able to assist the community organizations that are committed to helping those in need.

Chester Lee, Chair of CPC's Board of Directors said, "We applaud the New York Department of State for supporting the Chinese-American Planning Council's (CPC) efforts to ensure the continued vibrancy of the communities and neighborhoods in which we live and work. CPC's Workforce Development Division is excited to work with the New York Department of State to provide vital job readiness and job placement services to low-income immigrants who are looking to enter or re-enter the workforce with the help of this grant. This funding greatly enhances our mission in serving the immigrant and Lower East Side communities."

Services provided under this grant will be done through the CPC Career Center and will support the agency's efforts in assisting the unemployed and under-employed to gain skills and access resources in finding jobs by using an individualized case management approach. The agency will enhance its case management model and add follow-up and retention services. Services include outreach and networking, career counseling, job readiness, ESL, financial literacy, civic literacy, job placement assistance, retention and follow-up.

CPC Volunteers & Interns Give Back for the Holidays

vip giving back for the holidays 2011

The Volunteer & Internship Program (VIP) participated in the 92nd Street YMCA's Annual "Teensgiving" event November 13, 2011.  Over 1,000 youth from across NYC dedicated a day of service to various nonprofit organizations in honor of Thanksgiving.  Fifteen members of the CPC VIP volunteered at Abraham Residence III.  Abaraham Residence II is an extended-stay community residence for formerly homeless individuals with psychiatric disabilities.

VIP members assisted program staff and residents with preparing sandwiches and salad for lunch service as well as cookies and cakes to bring early holiday cheer to the residence.  They also played board games with some of the residents during their recreational time.  Interacting with people outside of their daily routine not only brightened the day of the residents, it also mentally stimulated them and gave them a larger sense of community since many are not in touch with their families.  Through this experience members of the VIP were able to see and learn about the importance of social interaction and community.

VIP members also partnered with Hosanna Fellowship at Oversea Chinese Mission to participat in "Operation Christmas Child", organized by Samaritan's Purse.  The VIP put together 7 shoe box Christmas presents filled with donated toys, school supplies and travel sized personal hygiene products for children in Third World Countries.  Participating "Operation Christmas Child" helped the youth to understand the struggles of children less fortunate than them and the importance of getting an education.

If you would like members of the CPC VIP to help out at a Volunteer Event please contact us at volunteer@cpc-nyc.org or call (212) 941-0920 x.155.
