Members of Open Door Senior Citizens Center Celebrates the Start of a New Year and a Lifetime of Love

march 2012 - open door vday event

CPC's Open Door Senior Citizen Center has been busy welcoming in the Year of the Dragon. On January 29th, 2012, Open Door Senior Citizen Center took part in Better Chinatown's "Annual Lunar New Year Parade". Over 100 staff and seniors took part in the parade with performances, such as lion dancing, waist drum dancing, and silk dancing, for an estimated 400,000 spectators according to the NY Daily News.

On February 1st, Open Door Senior Citizen Center also hosted a Lunar New Year party for its members and public officials. Members who had been with the senior citizen center for more than 30 years performed "Open Door is My Happy and Sweet Home", before a packed room. Other performances included senior citizens who sang "America the Beautiful" and teachers who sang "Amazing Grace" in English, and then a Chinese rendition.

Notably attending this year's festivities was Commissioner Lilliam Barrios-Paoli from the Department for the Aging. Her welcome was orchestrated with a resounding lion dance performance. Open Door Senior Citizen Center's staff and members applauded Commissioner Barrios-Paoli for all the hard work she had done for their center by presenting her with a large Chinese golden nugget and arts-and-craft dragons and rabbits made by the seniors themselves.

On February 14th, Valentine's Day, Open Door Senior Citizen Center hosted their first Valentine's Day event at Jing Fong Restaurant. 16 pairs of couples who had been married for more than 30 years and one couple had been married for 86 years, embraced one another loves and reminisced about the first time they met and their time together. Many mentioned their love was not a romantic story nor was it free love, many just met one another no more than two times before marriage.

CPC Partners with CUNY Baruch VITA Program

VITA 2012The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is a free program sponsored by the IRS to assist the low to moderate income families with their tax returns. This is the second year CPC is partnering with CUNY Baruch's VITA Program. Last year Brooklyn Branch received VITA services and the staff and the hundreds of clients served were pleased with the help that was offered.  Now in our second year of partnership, Baruch VITA members are stationed at CPC's Manhattan Community Services Center, Queens Branch and Brooklyn Branch.

The Baruch VITA program started in the early 1990's and it is increasing its impact on the community as it grows. Last year alone, the Baruch VITA program help claimed over $6.3 million in tax refund. CPC is partnering with the Baruch VITA program by providing them the space necessary to perform their service for the community. Baruch VITA members served over 300 clients during their first weekend in CPC locations.  The Baruch College students participating in the VITA Program include under graduates and graduates whose majors varies from science to business management; however majority of the students major in accounting.  Besides helping the people in need, the VITA program also gives the volunteer valuable experiences that will help them in the future.

Here is a friendly reminder, the 2011 Federal Tax Return deadline this year is on April 17th and the NY State Tax Return is due on April 18th.
