Summer at Baxter Street SACCC

summer 2011 at ps130

This summer Baxter Street School Age Center's Summer Camp Program was relocated to PS 20.  Although they were all very anxious about the move, the experience of working at PS 20 was very positive.  Not only did the students and staff make new friends and adapt to a new school; the principal, James Lee, assistant principal, Jennifer Chase and the custodian, Frank warmly welcomed and supported the program throughout the summer.  The move did not hinder the delivery of enriching programming that CPC is known to provide.  The children participated in enrichment programs that include the studies of Japan and South Korea as well as participating in the Recycling and Save the Earth, Ice Age, and Energy Conservation.  Not only did the children receive a quality education over the summer, they learned that no matter where we are, we can live, work, play and be happy when everyone is so positive.

Honoring 9/11 Hand in Hand

hand in hand 9/10/11

On Saturday, September 10th members of the CPC Volunteer CORE joined Community Board 1 and others from across NYC and the country to pay tribute to the thousands of lives that were lost or affected by 9/11.  Community Board 1 started the Hand In Hand event in honor of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11.  Hundreds of people lined Manhattan's waterfront from the North entrance of Battery Park to the South entrance of Battery Park.  Holding hands to form a human chain at 8:46am when the first plane hit the Work Trade Center, all participants observed a moment of silence.

Although many of the CORE members and interns were very young when 9/11 happened, they all felt that it was important for them to do something to honor those lost on that day and represent the Chinatown community.

Queens Youth Become Smoke-Free Junior Fellows

Throughout the summer, 35 youth attended smoke free workshops through CPC Queens Branch's Smoke-Free Queens Program and created their own Smoke-Free campaign projects.  Of the 35 participants, 12 youth participants became Smoke-Free Junior Fellows.

On July 20th, 35 youth participants attended a hands on workshop at Nan Shan Senior Center that focused on educating youth about health issues related to smoking and to increase awareness about the tobacco industry targeting the youth as "replacement smokers".  One of the many activities was a game of Jeopardy in which participants were asked questions about smoking and the 8 chemicals and over 4,000 toxic chemicals that are found in cigarettes.  Participants also conducted experiments to filter out chemicals found in cigarettes such as tar, acetone and DDT, demonstrating the harmful chemicals that remain in a smoker's lungs after smoking.

After the July 20th workshop, 12 motivated youth took the next leap and divided themselves into smaller groups to explore different ways to get more involved in the Smoke-Free mission and presented their projects at CPC Queens Branch on August 30th.  Teams focused on different approaches to educate others about the dangers of smoking.  Partnering with the American Cancer Society, one team went to PS20 to educate 5th grades about smoking.  By describing the differences between a smoker's lungs and a non-smoker's lungs, the 5th graders were able to see and smell the differences between the two.  Another group partnered with Asian Americans For Equality to create portfolios of tobacco ads.  These portfolios demonstrate how tobacco marketing influences our youth to smoke.  The last group partnered with Korean Community Service to write a letter to a local newspaper outlining their concerns for tobacco marketing in NYC and their focus on teens.

The youth are our smoke-free policy ambassadors, they can change their community by reaching out to their family and friends by advocating and increasing their awareness of
tobacco issues.  Each Smoke-Free Junior Fellow will continue to bring awareness to smoke-free issues in our community and to educate their family and peers on how smoking affects everyone around us.
