Volunteer CORE Cook Off

Youth Participants for CPC Cook Off
The CPC Volunteer CORE organized a Cook Off for high school youth on May 29, 2011. With 5 teams of high school students and close to 30 spectators the CPC Cook Off was a large success. The event was entirely organized by members of the Volunteer CORE; demonstrating the leadership and planning abilities of CPC's core group of high school volunteers. The CORE members wanted to host a fun event where their peers can showcase their talents and build confidence in their abilities. Team Wacksauce won with an impressive tempura dish and chicken wings dish.
Overall the Coof Off made $150, which goes towards funding for the continuation of the Volunteer & Internship Program (VIP). The VIP is still $1,500 short of raising $6,000 to keep the VIP running for the rest of the year.
A special thank you goes out to Sea Town Fish and Meat Market (328-332 Linden St. Brooklyn, NY 11237) for providing basic ingredients used for the Cook Off. The Volunteer CORE is a part of the CPC Volunteer & Internship Program (VIP) which encourages youth to develop and exercise their leadership skills through the organization of community service days and fundraising events to benefit the community. The Asian Population in NYC is 12% and Growing
but Receives Less Than 1% of Gov't Funding
May 5th was Asian American Pacific Islander Advocacy Day in NYC. In honor of the day the 12% And Growing Coalition -- headed by Coalition for Asian American Children & Families (CACF) and Minkwon Community Action -- hosted a rally and a series of meetings with key City Council Members to increase awareness of the Pan-Asian population in NYC and the resources they need.
While the Pan-Asian community makes up 12% and more of the population of NYC, they receive 0.24% of NYC's social service contracts and 0.38% of foundation dollars in NYC. The 12% And Growing Coalition advocates for budget priorities that support much needed services in the Pan-Asian community such as childcare and youth programs, domestic violence empowerment programs, senior center funding, literacy programs and programs for low-income individuals.
Simon Philipose of CPC's Youth Division spoke on behalf of CPC about the positive effects of the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) and the gave personal accounts of how the program has changed the hundreds of youth who apply through CPC every summer. Philipose urged City Council Members to increase the budget allocated for the much needed youth program. "A summer that might have otherwise have been squandered in front of a television or with video games can instead be time spend learning how to work effectively in a team, time management, financial literacy skills, how to be successful in the workplace and learning skills that youth might not learn in the classroom of academia, but rather in the classroom that is NYC."

Youth participants with "We've Seen Enough" written on their hands | "We've Seen Enough!"
May 31st, World No Tobacco Day, teens from CPC Queens and Brooklyn joined together in Union Square to protest the deadly influence of tobacco in their communities. The tobacco industry spends approximately $1.2 million per week in marketing to recruit youth to become "replacement smokers". At World No Tobacco Day, youth were blindfolded to convey their message: "We have seen enough"! It is vital that stores remove tobacco marketing that will influence our future generation.
The youngest participant from CPC Queens, Reika Oshima, 11, supports a smoke-free New York City. Reika's father quit smoking four years ago after persistent pressure and support from her brother and herself. Reika's was concerned about the long term effect of smoking on her father's health. She is very happy her father quit smoking. She hopes people will not start smoking because it will negatively affect their health and also the health of their family and friends as second-hand smokers.
Our children are exposed to tobacco marketing in stores on a daily basis. What can we do to make a difference?
Solution
- Decrease visibility of tobacco marketing in stores
- Limit the sale of tobacco near school
- Prohibit the sale of tobacco near at pharmacies
- Educate the community about the tobacco industry marketing to youth
- Outreach to community groups to build awareness and support
- Let your elected officials know your concerns
