CPC Central Staff Corner
The Asian Pacific American Heritage Festival was held May 3rd at the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza. Despite the unrelenting rain, 3 CPC staff members and 3 volunteers braved the elements and reached out to many Asian American organizations in NYC and helped make CPC's service known. A special thanks goes out to Jehanne Wyllie and Rain Zheng for their help prior to the event and for joining me on the day of the event and of course a special thank you to our volunteers. |

In the Spotlight
People Who Go Above And Beyond

CPC Bulletin writer, Christina Wong recently had the pleasure of speaking with the new Brooklyn Branch director, Weijing Shi. Ms. Shi received her MSW (Master in Social Work) from NYU's School of Social Work and has gained valuable experience in clinical social work through her time as a clinical social worker at the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center. Ms. Shi became the director of CPC's Brooklyn Branch in October 2008 with hopes that her experience as a clinical social worker and her compassion for the Chinese community will help the CPC Brooklyn Branch serve the growing number of people who need services during this hard economic time.
What was the most rewarding part of your work as a clinical social worker? There are many barriers and assimilation issues that new immigrants must face. Being a clinical social worker allowed me to provide clinical services such as mental health treatment and counseling as well as professional social work services to them to help make the transition easier. As a social worker I was able to help new immigrants work through their language barriers, transition issues, and adjustment issues. Being a first generation immigrant myself, I think new immigrants strongly need guidance for those three main issues when first coming to the US.
How did you get involved with CPC? While working at the Charles B. Wang Community Center's health clinic I referred many of the clients that they could not serve to CPC's Preventative Service because I believed in the services that CPC provided their clients. While in graduate school my professor recommended me for the position of director at the Brooklyn Branch, however I declined the offer because I wanted to pursue a career in clinical work. However, in 2008, my professor recommended me for the position for a second time and this time I accepted the offer with the hope of using my clinical skills and spirit of compassion and leadership to help the many people in the Chinese community.
What are your hopes for the Brooklyn Branch? Like many programs and services in the non-profit sector, the CPC Brooklyn Branch is facing deep budget cuts due to the economic down turn. Despite the budget cuts, I would like to search for more funding to provide more essential services to the Brooklyn community. I would also like to use my leadership skills to bring all of the Brooklyn programs together and work towards a new level of professionalism so we can provide our clients with the best quality services possible. The Brooklyn Branch receives many walk-in's who are looking for help with services such as Food Stamps and Social Security Insurance. I hope that the branch will be able to connect with the members of the community more so we can provide them with the exact services that they need. Along with providing the community with the services they need with a new level of professionalism, I hope that the CPC Brooklyn Branch will be able to collaborate with other agencies in Brooklyn so we can all provide diverse and quality services to the community. |
