"SUNY-China 150" Fundraising Event
SUNY 150 StudentsIn CPC's efforts to help the Chinese community, the organization partnered with the China Earthquake Rebuilding Fund to host a benefit dinner at Elmhurst East Manor restaurant September 18, 2008.  As a result of the devastating earthquake that hit China's Sichuan Province in May of 2008 that displaced millions of survivors, 150 college students were transferred to various SUNY (State University of NY) campuses to continue their education while the region rebuilds.  The continued education of these bright students will prepare them for their return to China and assist in the rebuilding efforts.  While it will take many years to rebuild, the $31,511 raised from this fundraising event will rebuild and improve the lives of millions.

People Going Above and Beyond
HeartOne of the oldest and most frustrating barriers any immigrant faces when immigrating to a new country is language.  The language barrier is particularly frustrating for Chinese immigrants because of the many dialects of Chinese that are spoken in various areas around the country.  With a shortage of bilingual professionals in the medical field, it becomes harder for the children of elderly immigrants to find their parents the quality care that they need.  In acknowledgement of the numerous barriers that immigrants face, CPC manages many programs that address barriers such as language and social and cultural assimilation.

Recently, CPC received a generous donation to the CPC Volunteer Program from Richard Ho and his friends on behalf of his late mother who would have benefited from the multi-lingual services of CPC if circumstances had been different.  Mrs. Ho needed medical care however her children were not able to easily find her the quality care that she needed because of the language barrier that existed between her and the nurses and attendants that were assigned to her case.  Although Mrs. Ho was not able to take advantage of the programs and services that CPC offers to the Chinese community, other Chinese families in New York are currently facing the same hardships that her family had to face.  With the generous donation to the CPC Volunteer Program that was made on behalf of his mother, Mr. Ho hopes that the people involved in the volunteer program will realize and understand the numerous barriers and inequalities that people face due to language and use their abilities and compassion to make a difference in the community.

If you would like to help make a difference in your community, please contact CPC's Volunteer Program Coordinator at volunteer@cpc-nyc.org
