| Greetings! | |
September: A Water Gardening Month To Remember To me September is a transitory month here in Central Kentucky. Colors change from green to multitudinous shades of red, yellow, orange, purple, and brown. Temperatures change from hot and steamy, to cooler and occasionally chilly. Sports change from baseball to football, food changes from ice cream to hot soup, days grow shorter, and the old world just keeps right on a spinnin'.
If you're a pond enthusiast who loves their colorful and personable koi, their aquatic plants, and everything else that goes with the water gardening hobby when the month of September comes rolling around you start thinking of preparing for the upcoming Fall and Winter.
There are a few basic steps that you'll need to be prepared to address:
Take Care of Your Fish! As the temperatures begin to sneak down into the 60's on a regular basis, you should start feeding your fish a little bit less each day. Then when the temperature regularly hits 55 degrees, you must STOP FEEDING them completely. At that point they're beginning to go into hibernation for the winter, and feeding them after that tends to confuse and antagonize their metabolic system and cause digestive problems. So the strategy at this time of year is to give them just enough nutrition so that, as they go into hibernation, like the proverbial grizzly bear out in the forest, your koi will have enough stored nutrition to make it through the long hard winter, while parked safe and sound at the bottom of your pond.
Take Care of the Leaves! As those colorful leaves begin falling off the surrounding trees one by one (it may be late September before this begins), you may want to consider purchasing a net and custom built frame from us to throw over the pond in order to minimize the leaf population that could end up on the bottom of your pond. Any debris that ends up on the pond's bottom inevitably deteriorates, biodegrades, and emits toxins, too much of which can cause problems for you fish. So try to minimize the amount of "debris" that ends up in your pond by using a net.
Finally, Remember to Have Fun!! September is a month that's still alive with outdoor possibilities. So whatever you do, take full advantage of them. Light a fire in the fire pit if the weather calls for it. Roast some weenies or marshmallows, and finish off the season with a flurry of fun. After all, you and your family all deserve it, right?
Sincerely

Fall vs. Spring Installations.
We get a lot of questions this time of year about the best time to install/upgrade water features. The common misconception is that once the weather starts to cool that it is better to wait until Spring to install/upgrade your water feature. In most cases this is absolutely FALSE. There are several reasons why the Fall/Winter months are a better time to install/upgrade ponds and water features. Without getting into details I would like to explore some of the main reasons why the Fall/winter months are perfect for installing the pond of your dreams.
-
Inflation - This point goes along with point number 1. Inflation is a fact of life. With rapidly rising fuel costs it is all but guaranteed that material, rock, labor and other costs will be anywhere from 2%- 10% higher the following Spring.
-
Plants - Plants are a major factor in creating a healthy Pond/Pondless Waterfall. Plants use nutrients from the water that would otherwise promote algae growth in your system. When you install your feature in the Fall of the year you give your plants a couple of weeks head start to establish themselves and get a jump start in the Spring of the year. Therefore, increasing the health of your system in the Spring months.
-
Timing - In the Spring of the year most credible water feature businesses will have obligations to service their existing customers ponds and attend to their Spring maintenance obligations. Therefore, If you are interested in having your feature professionally installed you could very easily be looking at a May/June installation date. For example we only allocate 1-2 new installations for the March and April Months. Therefore, it is typical for our Spring contract signings to encounter a 3-6 month waiting period for their project installation.
In summary the Fall months provide the perfect opportunity to get the water feature of your dreams installed in a timely manner and (in some cases) at a reduced cost over waiting until the Spring months. |

Hanah's Charity "KOIner"
I am super excited about our new store location. More people equals more fund raising oppurtunities. The Lucky Duck program will continue to exist. However, mom and dad has suggested that we change the prgram to give percent discounts vs actual Koins. We believe this will entice more people to participate in the program and ultimately provide me more oppurtunities to help out local charities.
New Game Rules:
Purchase a chance to pick a Duck for $2.00. The ducks will be floating in our indoor pond. Each Duck will have a discount amount written on the bottom up to 25% off

Austin's Pond Life Lesson
When do KOI/Goldfish have babies?
Austin's Answer: "Spring."
Austin's answer may seem obvious. However, he is only partially correct. Most pond fish are likely to breed on a regular basis in a pond setting where plant life is ample. Female fish lay fertilized eggs among the plants, and males tend the young. Having the right conditions for breeding is key to determining when pond fish will breed.
-
Temperature - Cues from the environment can help pond fish breed spontaneously, so the temperature of the pond should be approximately 74 F, or 23 C, to increase the probability of spawning.
-
Season - Most pond fish will breed during the spring months and the early summer months. Females will be swollen with eggs and will seem particularly interested in the pond's plant life.
-
Plant Life - With plant life in your pond, fish will be more motivated to breed, so make sure to include numerous plant species with different plant textures that offer plenty of hiding places.
-
Egg Media - Pond fish eggs need a special place to hatch in order to increase their likelihood of survival. Rock & Gravel ponds make for a natural egg media and also ensures a greater likelihood that pond fish will breed.
-
Behavior - A female fish that is full of eggs swims more frantically, especially through plant life. Koi are far more obvious, as male fish harass females to coax them into expelling their eggs
