Greetings!
Spring is by far the most exciting time of any pond owner. Before you know it you are outside enjoying the weather and all the wonder and excitement of your beautiful pond again, which brings us to the topic of preparing your pond for spring. Mother Nature has a fantastic way of preparing her natural bodies of water for each new season by flooding waterways with fresh rains and melting snow, pushing old water out and refreshing it with new. In your ecosystem pond this service needs to be provided manually on an annual basis to help maintain its low maintenance beautiful appearance. The spring maintenance process involves a drain and refill, removal of any heavy debris and leaves that may have accumulated during fall and winter, thinning of overgrown aquatic plants, and replacement of light bulbs & filter mats as needed all while ensuring that your fish and other pond inhabitants stay safe and sound throughout the process.
For those of you that have a Pondless Waterfall or Fountain the need to refresh your system still exists. Organic debris will form in your stream beds ultimately causing you excessive string algae issues. Additionally plants may become overgrown.
It's a dirty job, but somebody has got to do it! It's really not as hard as it sounds and for the "Down and Dirty", do-it-yourself individual that may be a little nervous we offer a hands on spring startup seminar at our Aquatic Garden Center in April of every year. |
