H2O Designs Fall Maintenance
Greetings!

Winter will soon be upon us and it's time to start thinking about preparing our ponds for the ensuing cold weather.

With the cooler weather approaching there are several tips/tasks that you should be aware of to ensure your finned friends are safe and healthy all winter long.

  1. Pond Netting - If your pond is located in an area where excessive leaves are subject to end up in your pond then netting your pond is a great way to reduce your winter and spring maintenance. More importantly excessive leaves in a pond can cause oxygen deprivation and ultimately all your fish could die. To prevent this unfortunate event it is critical  that all leaves and debris are removed form the pond in a timely manner.
  2. Cold Water Bacteria - Everyone should know by now that our Eco~Clearer bacteria helps keep our ponds clean and clear all summer long. Historically once the water temperature drops below 55 degrees F we have stopped all water treatments. However, recent biological technology has provided us with a specially blend of microbes that will continue to break down pond muck all winter long. This will not only provide a safe and healthy environment for your fish but will also help reduce spring maintenance for your pond.
  3. Pond Heaters vs. Waterfalls Running - There are 3 acceptable ways of wintering your fish in your pond. (1) Leave your waterfall running to oxygenate the water as well as keep a hole in otherwise frozen ponds to allow potentially deadly gasses to escape. (2) Place a bubbler pump in your pond to agitate the water to keep a hole in the ice (3) Place a "Pond Heater" in the pond to keep a hole in the ice. Of the before mentioned methods the preferred is option (1) because it keeps a hole in the ice and oxygenates the pond.
  4. Fish Feeding - Regardless of your method of keeping your fish safe you should cease all fish feeding once the temperature drops below 50 degrees F. Fish are cold blooded animals and therefore cannot digest excessive amounts of food in cold weather. Therefore, feeding fish in cold weather could result in death to your finned friends.
