Greetings!

I want to take a moment to thank you so much for keeping up with the world of adaptive reuse. Hopefully, you find a few things of interest in each newsletter. I'm always looking for new things to highlight as well as for feedback, so please feel free to share your thoughts and ideas.

Again, I really appreciate your continued interest in my work. I wish you all the best in 2011.

Sincerely,

Christine Terrell

the 800 pound gorilladavid mach gorilla sculpture

This piece could absolutely sit wherever it wanted to in my world. I am fascinated by David Mach's coat hanger sculptures from both an aesthetic and process-oriented standpoint. How does he do it? After reading this article, I know a bit more about it, but really it still seems just one step removed from magic.
For a bit more. . .

class it up

adaptive reuse concrete jewelryI'm finishing up a concrete furniture making class with Eric Billig right now. Eric is a concrete master and very zen about my decision to pass on the furniture in favor of experiments in jewelry-making.

I'm always scouring the "recently acquired" racks at the main branch of the Austin Public Library. I never leave disappointed. Last week I scored this gem. The subtitle is "Creative Design For Everyday Objects." I think it would be more accurate to say FROM

Everyday Objects, but either way, I love it. Read more. . .

Upcycled Scarflet
I know I'm a bit heavy on the repurposed sweater thing in this section, but the weather just got down to about 32° in the ATX, so I've got warm things on my mind. Plus, I just really dig this oversized button look. I'm thinking it would be extra-awesome if the buttons were made from upcycled tins. Hmmm.
Anyway, this super simple tutorial will have you making one for every Valentine on your list.

eat upchocolate mousse
Serve this for dessert on Valentine's Day and it might just be the heathiest part of the meal. Oh, did I mention that it's also super delicious??!

Chocolate Mousse

3/4  c. semisweet chocolate chips, melted

1  (12.3-oz) pkg reduced-fat extra-firm tofu

1/4  teaspoon salt

3  large egg whites

1/2  c.  sugar

1/4  c. water

1. Place chocolate and tofu in a food processor or blender, and process 2 minutes or until smooth.

2. Place salt and egg whites in a medium bowl, and beat with a mixer at high speed until stiff peaks form.

3. Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan; bring to a boil. Cook, without stirring, until candy thermometer registers 238°. Pour the hot sugar syrup in a thin stream over egg whites, beating at high speed.

4. Gently stir one-fourth of meringue into the tofu mixture; gently fold in remaining meringue.

5. Spoon 1/2 cup mousse into each of 8 (6-ounce) custard cups. Cover and chill for at least 4 hours. Garnish with whipped topping and grated chocolate, if desired.

National Geographic Shelf hang it up

This shelf is by far the best thing I could imagine as a use for old National Geographics. More. . .
