When Ondra-Huyett learned in late 2008 that Penn State might be moving its Lehigh Valley Campus from Fogelsville to the Center Valley building, we knew we had to be a part of the construction process. With so many PSU grads at Ondra-Huyett, this was a project to win, perform well and have our good name a part of the new campus.
"We don't do a lot of public bid work, but our Penn State staff including Director of Project Management Robin Hoover, PSU '82, Sr. Project Manager Jim Eck, PSU '95 and Project Manager Mark Yatcilla, PSU '97 said we had to do the construction. I guess its a Nittney Pride thing," said Mike Ondra.
Penn State awarded three separate construction projects for the new campus. Ondra-Huyett competed against many of the most eager construction firms in Eastern Pa to win the largest of the three contracts -- the chemistry and biology labs and classrooms.
Speaking at one of the recent public opening events, Chancellor Ann Williams Ed.D. commended Ondra-Huyett and all the construction people who delivered the project saying, "Ondra-Huyett did an outstanding job building these facilities. It's amazing what these folks can do on a very tight schedule."

Solving The Building Owner's Construction Challenge:
Integrated Project Delivery - The Next Evolution in Design and Construction for Owners.
Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) is a project delivery approach that integrates people, systems, business structures and practices into a process that collaboratively harnesses the talents and insights of all participants to reduce waste and optimize efficiency through all phases of design, fabrication and construction. (Working definition from AIA California Council)
Throughout 2009, Ondra Huyett met with a number of local architecture firms to present and discuss the concepts of Integrated Project Delivery. Those discussions have lead to a better understanding from industrial professionals as to how architects, engineers, constructors and trade contractors can work together to deliver better construction projects for owners.

Industry News |
Expert Decries Shortcomings of Conventional Construction Delivery Attorney Barry Lepatner's 2007 book, Broken Buildings, Busted Budgets: How to fix America's Trillion-Dollar Construction Industry provides his insights from 25 years of representing owners and developers.
He decries the shortcomings of conventional construction delivery and offers his prescriptions for improving the industry. His key expectations are that budgets and schedules will be met, no surprises, and that information be truly shared among all team members to ensure fully informed decisions.
Lepatner envisions intermediaries, firms that reduce the amount of asymmetric information between owners and constructors, and drive the process to achieve budget and schedule goals. He feels that, "construction managers working collaboratively with architects could become the industry's most important intermediary." It is that intermediary role that Ondra-Huyett Associates aspires to.

OH Amused |
The Hammer Guy...
Of all the infomation we provided in our last newsletter,
we got a lot of great feedback about this video.
We call him "The Hammer Guy."
Now maybe we're just construction nerds.
Or, maybe we're a little jealous.
Or, maybe we've been on the job too long.
Anyway, we find this 53 second video... well, somewhat amusing.
