Everything is OK in Oklahama City!

The Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that its 19th Annual Inter-City Leadership Conference will be held in Oklahoma City, OK. The event will take place Sept. 26 -28, 2012. The announcement was made to the Board of Directors on Feb. 22, 2012 and was well received by all. This year's volunteer chair is Alan Rothschild who currently serves on the Chamber's Executive Committee.

The reasons for choosing Oklahoma City (OKC) are many. Even though OKC is much larger in size and population than Columbus, there are many commonalities that the Chamber feels we can learn from and emulate. One such example is their river front development along the Oklahoma River. A 7-mile stretch of the river has been transformed into a series of river lakes bordered by landscaped areas, trails and recreational facilities. In the 1990's, seeing a need to develop a vibrant downtown, Greater Oklahoma City Chamber and then President Ron Ackerman and Mayor Ron Norick along with their staffs developed the Metropolitan Area Projects or MAPS, which approval led to the construction of the Bricktown ballpark and a tree-lined, mile-long canal through the district, as well as other projects in downtown. The ballpark opened in 1998 and the canal opened in July 1999. Water taxis carry visitors to different stops along the canal, including many restaurants, shops and nightclubs.

"We have come a long way in Columbus but we have a long way to go. There are many elements that we can learn from them.  They are the City for several Olympic trials water events.  They have become a top national leader in amateur sports. Their recent investments of over $700,000,000 in their downtown entertainment and community development demonstrate why we chose this year's trip" states Mike Gaymon, President & CEO of the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce.

Plans are well underway to make this a great experience. If you are interested in attending or would like more information, contact Becky Gordon 706-257-1186 or bgordon@columbusgachamber.com.

Health Care Solutions for Chamber Members

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia offers Chamber members Choice and Savings!

One of the health insurance industry's best kept secrets is a product called Employee Elect. Offered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia (BCBSGa*), Employee Elect allows a qualified employer to offer as many as 30 different coverage options to each of their employees. Each eligible employee can choose from any plan on the list they wish, allowing them to have the best plan to suit their needs!

In addition to increased employee choice, another benefit of Employee Elect is that business owners can stabilize their health care costs. Most employers know the amount they can afford for health care coverage. With this new product, they can declare the amount they wish to contribute to their employees' benefits, then an employee can choose the plan that best meets their needs by paying the difference between the base amount and the selected benefits. Commonly referred to as a "defined contribution plan", this allows each employee to know how much they are receiving from their employer toward their coverage.

As part of this program, all BCBSGa small business plans are available at reduced premium rates to eligible business members of our Chamber of Commerce! Through the group "buying power" of the MemberCare Alliance of Muscogee CountySM, we are part of a statewide network of over 130 Chambers of Commerce offering discounted insurance products to Chamber member businesses. The MemberCare Alliance of Muscogee County program includes a variety of discounted insurance products, such as: group term, voluntary and dependent life insurance, group dental insurance, group long term and short term disability, accidental death and dismemberment and long term care insurance.

For more information on these insurance offerings, please call the Chamber, one of your participating Chamber-member insurance agents, or Purchasing Alliance Solutions, Inc., (the company that developed MemberCare Alliance of Muscogee County program) at 770-579-1214 or 1-800-782-8254.
