"An Ounce of Prevention...
The National Labor Relations Board is trying desperately to get more pro union rulings passed prior to January 1st 2012
That fact is driving most if not all Labor Law attorneys to advise their clients that they must be proactive in their employee relations efforts if they want to have any chance at all of remaining union free.
What does this mean to businesses? It means that there will be no time to be reactive to unions. You must be proactive through the use of positive employee relations practices.
What do you need to do?
First: You should be sure that your employees know that you believe in a union free environment, because you believe that there is no substitute for direct open dialogue between you and all the employees of your organization. This should be communicated in your employee handbook and your employee orientation.
Second: You should have a formal written problem resolution process that is publicized and used by your employees.
Third: You should have a formal communications program that insures open communications back and forth in your organizations.
Fourth: You should be aware of pay rates and benefits in the area where your business is located by participating in pay and benefit surveys.
Fifth: You should perform confidential attitude surveys on an annual basis to find out what your employees feel are the strengths and weaknesses of your organization.
Sixth: You should be measuring your % Turnover, and strive for a 0 % Turnover rate. Hold management accountable for turnover. In dollars turnover should be calculated as 1&1/2 of an annual salary.
These are a few of the tools that will help you combat any third party intervention from outside of your organization.
Questions? Contact Strategic HR Partners. We'll work with you to help you with this process!
