September Eye-Opener Breakfast
Mark Strunk, Business Resource Center, provided the Human Resources minute at the Sept. 22 Eye Opener Breakfast about the impact of drugs and alcohol in the workplace. He gave an example of an employee who had an accident in the workplace and was asked to take a drug test. He showed the employer how steady his hands were but when his drug test came back it showed that person would have had to drink at least a 5th of whiskey to have that high of alcohol content in his system. He went on to ask the question how many of you have had to deal with drugs or alcohol in their families.

One of the largest attended Inter-City Leadership Conference's returned Sept. 30 from Charlotte
 | |
Jackie Lowe, chair of the Inter-City Leadership Conference, welcomes the 96 people who flew out of Columbus to Charlotte on the 18th Annual Inter-City Leadership Conference Sept. 28.
|
Trip to Charlotte was a Success!
The Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce experienced another exciting leadership conference. The 18th Annual Inter-City Leadership Conference was held in Charlotte, NC, Sept. 28 - 30, 2011. Ninety-six people from our community traveled to Charlotte to look at best practices in the areas of economic development, tourism, city planning and education, just to name a few.
The participants were wowed during their trip to the US National White Water Center where several were able to take a trip through the rapids while others enjoyed zip lining across the waters below. The attendees learned that it's not just about kayaking; it's the activities around the water that aid in bringing spectators and outdoor enthusiasts to the venue.
 | |
(L-R) Mayor Teresa Tomlinson and Carmen Cavezza, Chair of the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce, dressed for the Richard Petty Driving Experience during the Inter-City Leadership Conference in Charlotte, NC.
|
Another exciting visit was to the Northwest School for the Arts. The participants were greeted by students who were dressed in costume. The tour of the school revealed very talented students who were dedicated to both their schoolwork and their crafts.
On Tuesday, Oct. 25, the group of attendees met again to look at the best "take-aways" from the trip and to see what Columbus could do in order to take the next steps in addressing some of these areas. Stay tuned for more information and results from the trip to Charlotte.
In a jam packed three days the 96 participants heard from 19 different speakers and visited more than 17 different facilities while learning about what Charlotte, N.C. had done well and if given the opportunity to do it over what they would have done differently. In future issues of the Chamber Express we will explore some of the key ideas that were generated from the 2011 Inter-City Leadership Conference.

White-Water coming to Columbus

On September 22nd at the ground breaking ceremony, with 100's watching, John Turner asked the crowd, "Can you see it?" ; this question of course was in reference to whitewater rafting on the Chattahoochee River. The project will be the longest urban whitewater venue in the world. It will have 2.5 miles of rafting, whitewater, kayaking, tubing and river surfing to name a few. Batson-Cook Construction, of LaGrange, GA was hired as the general contractor for the project. It is estimated to cost $20 million and have a total economic impact of $42 million annually while creating an estimated 700 new jobs. It is expected to attract 188,000 visitors to the area annually; an estimated 144,000 of those will come from out of town.

"An Ounce of Prevention... NLRA New Poster Requirement Delayed Until January 31, 2012
The National Labor Relations Act is a 76-year-old law that outlines workers' rights to unionize and bargain collectively in most private-sector workplaces. The fact that the board would want Americans aware of these rights is apparently seen by some as catering to labor unions.
The National Labor Relations Board announced on October 5, 2011, that it will delay the requirement that most private employers in the U.S. post a controversial new notice until January 31, 2012. The Notice informs employees of their legal rights under the National Labor Relations Act, and essentially gives them a road map for filing unfair labor practice charges against their employers. The Notice was, and is, strongly opposed by many employers, chambers of commerce and other organizations.
Make no mistake. The intention of the notice posting rulemaking is to increase the number of union organizing attempts against companies across the United States. However, there will be many unintended consequences of the NLRB's rulemaking. As frustrating as it will be for employers to post a road-map for organizing in their break room, this rule also gives companies a unique opportunity to invest in their direct relationship with employees. It provides a reason to reaffirm your commitment to creating a great place to work.
Ultimately this is an opportunity. Your company can turn this onslaught of administrative activity into a chance to reinforce your direct relationship with your employees. This is not what unions expect, but it is a great opportunity to reinforce positive employee relations within your companies.
