City Center Charlotte - The Heart of One of the Fastest Growing Areas

It's no surprise that Charlotte has become a business powerhouse as well as a favored destination for thousands of new arrivals. People of all ages come to Charlotte to work, to play and to enjoy a quality of life that strikes the right balance.

Charlotte is a pro-business city with a pro-business attitude. Charlotte has emerged as a major player in the global marketplace. Its Center City is the location of Fortune 500 corporate headquarters and more than 1200 businesses, the highest concentration in the metro area.

The Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce is going to Charlotte and will be hearing from Michael Smith, Pres. & CEO, Charlotte Center City Partners. We learn what Charlotte has accomplished in luring businesses to downtown, keeping it lively and fun for the young, and keeping it safe. Plan now to join us for this experience, Sept. 28- 30 for our 18th Annual Inter-City Leadership Conference. For more information contact Becky Gordon, bgordon@columbusgachamber.com or 706-257-1186.

As the Chamber's consultant, Joyce gives tremendous credit to the amazing volunteer leadership of the campaign, the efforts of the staff and of course, to the volunteers who worked so diligently.

"I'm proud to have been one of the team captains in the first TRC for the Chamber. Our team of 5 individuals sold over $41,000 in sponsorships! The support of Jane Nichols, D. Copeland, the staff of the Chamber and my team, including my Co-Captain Charlotte Quirk was essential in our success. The time and effort from each participant is a true testament of how vital the Chamber is to this community."

HR LEGAL Alert

  • On July 6th 2011 the largest ADA settlement in EEOC history was awarded to a class of hundreds of Verizon Communications employees who had been terminated or disciplined based on a rigid no fault absenteeism policy. The case was settled for $20 Million.
EEOC charged that Verizon violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), by failing to make reasonable accommodations with disabilities such as making an exception to their attendance policy for individuals whose chargeable absences were caused by their disabilities. Instead the EEOC said that the company disciplined or terminated employees who needed such accommodations. CHECK YOUR ABSENTEEISM POLICY.
  • On July 27th and July 28th organizations such as SHRM representing over 250,000 Human Resource professionals, the National Association of Manufacturers, The United States Chamber of Commerce and many more organizations representing businesses across the U.S. were presenting arguments against proposed changes through amendments that the National Labor Relations Board is trying to make, to make it easier for unions to organize employees. Conversely, every union of any size was there presenting their case to support these changes to the National Labor Relations Board. While Congress is fighting over the budget the new left wing in the NLRB is trying to make it easy for unions to organize your employees. Don't take your eye off the ball. Don't E-mail. Call your congressional representatives now. Let them know how you feel about this anti business legislation.

Workers' Comp Discount

Mac Cantrell
@ Action Buildings

When we became a drug-free workplace, we realized a significant savings in our workers' compensation insurance costs. Productivity and pride in workmanship increased while job site incidents decreased. However, we recognized an even greater benefit. As a locally owned family business, we not only care about the quality of our work, but we also care deeply about the quality of life for our employees and their families. The drug-free workplace program through the Chamber greatly benefits businesses like Action Buildings and the entire community.

No matter how strictly precautions are adhered to, how closely procedures are followed, accidents will happen. The likelihood of substance abuse being associated with the accident is alarming, as over 77% of all illicit drug users are employed. In fact, small and medium-sized firms employ 80% of the U.S. workforce where drug testing policies and programs are not in place. Absenteeism, increased healthcare costs, and decreased productivity due to alcohol and other substance abuse costs your company $1,000 per employee per year.

The Columbus Chamber of Commerce has saved Chamber members thousands of dollars while ensuring that your company's customers, vendors, and employees know they are dealing with a safe, drug-free workplace.
