Chamber Hosts Small Business Healthcare Policy Forum for Governor Nathan Deal's Health Insurance Exchange Advisory Commission
At the request of the Governor's Office, the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce were the very first to host a Small Business Healthcare Policy Forum for Governor Nathan Deal's Office, wherein a diverse gathering of 19 small business owners assembled ready to discuss a plethora of issues and policies on Thursday June 9 at the Chamber Depot. The morning's topic of discussion was the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) that was established under the Patient Protection Affordable Care Act (PPACA) for the purpose of increasing health insurance coverage options.
The Governor's Health Policy Advisor, Blake Fulenwider, briefed the group on the state's approach to deciding how Georgia will comply with the PPACA law by either establishing a SHOP Exchange or else deferring to the Federal government to establish the insurance exchange. The Governor has commissioned the Health Insurance Exchange Advisory Commission to gather input from small business owners through surveys and listening sessions held around the state, and to make its recommendations by December 15, 2011. The presentation was followed by a lively dialogue from attendees who expressed a wide variety of concerns regarding how the government mandates would impact their small businesses and the individuals that they employ. The forum was facilitated by Dennis Epps of the University of Georgia's Carl Vinson Institute of Government. Download the presentation here.

Read the blog posts and the more than 70 benefits of the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce
Partners In Education (PIE)
Melissa Wilks @ Wynnton Arts Academy
I work to better the lives of children everyday through teaching. The community works to better their lives through Partners In Education. The Chamber has created a way for business and community leaders to impact our youth and, in turn, the future of Columbus.
When it comes to community development, the single most important factor to focus on is education. Few facets in a person's upbringing prepare them for entering the workforce more than a good education.
Since 1987, the Columbus Chamber of Commerce has worked tirelessly hand-in-hand with the surrounding school districts to advance standards of education by facilitating meaningful and long-term business and community participation in public schools.
Last school year, the Chamber recorded over 59,248 volunteer hours and $291,149 of financial contributions to our various school partners thanks to PIE.
By establishing partnerships with local businesses, organizations, churches, military units, and civic clubs, our public and private school students have access to all necessary resources, are provided world-class instructive programming, and are acknowledged for their achievements. These partnerships not only benefit the students. They also offer school staff educational opportunities and recognition for their work in shaping the minds that will invent the future.
