Short Takes
Lee Mackinnon, Western Mass Regional Coordinator and Onsite Coordinator at Hilltown Community Health Center, is leaving Reach Out and Read at the end of the summer to complete her doctoral degree. Lee has been with Reach Out and Read for almost five years; all on the New England team have benefited from her calm and responsive presence.
Although no one can replace Lee, we have a number of strong candidates for her successor; Sites will be notified when the transition plans are complete.
The Hamill Gallery in Roxbury made a significant contribution to Reach Out and Read Sites in that neighborhood in connection with their current exhibition of handmade books, The Right Hand of Darkness. There's still a day or two to catch the exhibit: Click here for info.
Job Opportunity Developing a Massachusetts Literacy Website!
The Massachusetts Literacy Foundation (MLF) has created an exciting new interactive website for literacy professionals and is ready to build the team that will launch the site and manage site content flow on a weekly basis. Forward inquiries/resumes to cconroy@bostonherald.com

Massachusetts Newsletter
 Summer 2011

Serving 191,548 MA children in 219 Programs

Dear Reach Out and Read Colleagues,

Like a summer potluck, this issue of our Massachusetts Reach Out and Read newsletter has something for everyone...and almost more than we can fit in.

Most important, it highlights Grace McMann, Reach Out and Read Coordinator extraordinaire at the Greater Roslindale Medical and Dental Center. Read more about Grace below, and consider nominating your outstanding coordinator.

So check out the menu at our Table of Contents and see what a feast our Massachusetts providers, coordinators, and partners have cooked up! As always, thank you all for the variety and richness you bring to the table at Reach Out and Read Massachusetts.

Have a festive summer,

Alison

Coordinator Recognition Award

Grace McMann, long-time Reach Out and Read coordinator at the Greater Roslindale Medical and Dental Center, is the recipient of this summer's Reach Out and Read Coordinator Recognition Award. This new award honors a Program Coordinator who offers outstanding support and organizational skills along with notable enthusiasm for maintaining and strengthening the Program.

Grace contributes her time, energy, and great good humor-- and sometimes even her own personal finances--to keeping the Roslindale Reach Out and Read Program operating at full capacity. Nothing energizes Grace like an empty shelf, and she knows how to get her point across when stocks run low: "We have been unable to give out a single board book for the past 2 weeks--I have NONE!"

Always upbeat, whatever the challenge, and always singing Reach Out and Read's praises, Grace leads by example, never hesitating to spend her day off driving by the local Borders to "scour the shelves" or to pick up  a donation.

Grace's colleagues note her dedication, remarking that: "Grace is a pleasure to work with.  She's incredibly enthusiastic about our Reach Out and Read Program.  She makes sure, even at personal expense, that we always have enough books to hand out and to keep the kids reading.  Often overheard on the phone trying to hunt down new donations, she is tireless in her devotion to this program.  We are lucky to have her."

Not surprisingly, Grace is an avid reader who appreciates all formats,"...books, Kindle, and audiobooks in my car. I love most genres, especially mysteries. I'm currently reading A Discovery of Witches on my Kindle, listening to Hilderbrand's Barefoot in my car,  and have several books ready to pack for my cruise in 2 weeks."

Nearing retirement, Grace recently reflected, "I would have loved to have been a librarian had I not become a nurse practitioner. Yet, this way I get to be involved with the 2 things I love most:  children and books!"

Federal Funding Update

After 10 years of strong, bi-partisan support at the federal level, Reach Out and Read has lost all its federal funding ($6M). We are not alone: Reading is Fundamental and Teach for America were slashed as well, along with many other national programs serving children.

We are grateful to the Massachusetts House delegation and Senator Kerry, who  have been extremely supportive of Reach Out and Read's efforts; fortunately, our Massachusetts state funding remains secure, thanks to the strong support of the Governor, the Legislature, and the Department of Early Education and Care

Adopt-A-Site

As state and federal funding have declined in recent years, Sites have felt the decrease in the number of books that Reach Out and Read Massachusetts can give in sustainability awards.

This creates a problem for patients who love and benefit from getting a new book from their doctor during their well-child visit.

In brainstorming with other Reach Out and Read Sites across the country, Massachusetts Regional Coordinators have found one idea that has been successful elsewhere (as close as our neighboring Rhode Island).

Through the Adopt-A-Site program, Reach Out and Read Sites identify a local business that might be interested in adopting their office with a donation that would contribute to the cost of purchasing books, waiting room enhancements, and other items that are hard to squeeze into over-stretched budgets.

If you can think of a business that has a connection to your office, why not try asking them to adopt you?

Contact your Regional Coordinator for more information about this creative way to fundraise!

Journey Toward Literacy Conference Creates Early Literacy Connections

Reach Out and Read Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care joined forces to present  their  first statewide conference, The Journey Toward Literacy Begins at Birth,  in Worcester on April 6th.   Welcoming remarks from Earl Phalen, Chief Executive Officer of Reach Out and Read, and Sherri Killins, Commissioner of the Department of  Early Education and Care, got us off to a banner  start.   Through  vivid description and keen storytelling, Massachusetts Medical Director Dr. Marilyn Augustyn shared her insight into the developmental stages of early literacy and made  the  Reach Out and Read office visit come alive for the whole audience.  Continuing the focus, Betty Bardige, EdD, Vice-President of the A.M. Mailman Family Foundation, addressed   the building blocks of early literacy from an early education viewpoint. Over lunch, Dr. Perry Klass, National Medical Director of Reach Out and Read, inspired all with her appraisal of the importance of early literacy for our most vulnerable children.

The conference brought together early childhood professionals and medical personnel in a rare opportunity to share ideas and resources.  Reach Out and Read Early Literacy and Research Specialist Jean Ciborowski-Fahey, PhD , shared an on-line pre-K literacy screening tool and a treasure trove of early literacy resources for attendees to take with them.  In the words of one attendee,  the conference "validates and reinforces my beliefs and practical understanding."

If you missed  The Journey Towards Literacy Begins at Birth, stay tuned for information about similar conferences across the state in the coming  year.   Hope to see you there!

The Wiggles Big Birthday Tour!

The world-famous Wiggles have announced that Reach Out and Read is the official charity partner of their 2011 American tour!  This summer, Reach Out and Read and The Wiggles will work to raise awareness about the importance of parental involvement and reading aloud to young children.  Join The Wiggles, Captain Feathersword, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Henry the Octopus, Wags the Dog and all the Wiggly Dancers as they celebrate their Big Birthday.

Shows are scheduled for  11 am on Wednesday July 20 at Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis, and at 10:30 am on Thursday July 21, at South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset.

Children and their parents are invited to bring a new children's book to donate to a local Reach Out and Read Site, and a portion of the proceeds from all ticket sales at this venue will be used to support local Reach Out and Read Programs on the Cape and in the South Shore area.
