Dear Reach Out and Read Colleagues,
For so many of us who grew up attuned to the September-to-June rhythms of the school year, September brings the expectancy of new beginnings, as the dog days of August give way to the crisper, shorter days of Fall. At Reach Out and Read Massachusetts, this September brings new beginnings both for Gretchen Hunsberger, former Massachusetts Programs Director, and for myself, Alison Corning Clarke.
As you have heard, Gretchen will now serve as the Director of a collaboration of Reach Out and Read Programs in New England (CT, MA, VT, and NH), and I will move from my position as Southeast Regional Coordinator to attempt to fill her role.
Both of us are excited about the opportunities ahead. I am looking forward to a fuller experience of the incredible variety of needs and resources that exist throughout this beautiful state. As for Gretchen, she will be doing the same on a larger scale, making connections throughout New England that will help create a cohesive and vibrant Regional Coalition.
But for both of us, the mission remains the same: partnering with healthcare providers to give out books that help parents instill a lifelong love of reading in their children, ensuring that they arrive at kindergarten better prepared to fulfill their potential.
Thank you for joining us in this effort,
Alison Corning Clarke, MA, MSW
Massachusetts Programs Director

Leyendo Juntos in Action: Holyoke At the Holyoke Health Center, providers are using materials developed as part of Reach Out and Read's national Leyendo Juntos (Reading Together) initiative, which was designed to help providers to encourage Spanish-speaking parents and extended family members to read to young children. New bilingual reading tips posters are now in exam rooms at the Center, where over 90% of patients are Hispanic/Latino. At a recent medical staff meeting, Dr. Stephanie Billings shared on-line video clips highlighting literacy experiences of Hispanic/Latino families in a Reach Out and Read Site. According to Dr. Billings, "Patients love seeing the Spanish posters and materials. They feel that the Reach Out and Read program caters to their needs. Many of our parents only read in Spanish and having a bilingual-bicultural waiting room makes them feel at home. The materials open communication between families and staff about books and reading in the home. We love the Leyendo Juntos material." Leyendo Juntos materials include bilingual reading tips in a large-format bookmark and a bilingual reading tips poster. It also provides a Spanish Language Literacy Promotion Reference Guide, developed for Reach Out and Read providers who serve Hispanic/Latino families and who are familiar with but not necessarily fluent in Spanish. The handbook provides ideas and phrases to promote interaction with Spanish-speaking patients and families about books and reading aloud. If you would like to receive these materials for your Site, please contact Nora Murphy at nora.murphy@reachoutandread.org

Recent Legislative Site Visits

State Senator Stephen Brewer paid a visit to the Winchendon Health Center on Friday, August 27, and shared his stellar read-aloud skills with a group of young patients. Afterwards the Senator gave out books to all children in the waiting room and talked about his own love of reading. He individually greeted adults and children alike and created a festive atmosphere for one of the final days of summer. Senator Brewer is Vice-Chair of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means and has been a strong advocate for Reach Out and Read.

U.S. Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) visited the Brockton Neighborhood Health Center on September 7, 2010, not only to cheer them on, but to practice what doctors preach by reading to a group of young patients.
Upcoming Visits

State Representative Sonia Chang-Diaz will visit Roxbury Comprehensive Community Health Center in October.

Senate President Therese Murray will visit the PMG Physician Associates office in Sandwich on October 29th. |
A Warm Thanks!
Talent runs in families, and in the Minow/Singer family, so does generosity. Josephine Baskin Minow and her granddaughter, Mira Singer, both authors, have recently donated hundreds of copies of their books to Reach Out and Read. Ms. Minow wrote Marty the Broken Hearted Artichoke, a tale of kindness and acceptance written in a lively rhyme, with the intent of assisting organizations working to make life better for all children. This goal will be met when copies of her book are distributed throughout Massachusetts Reach Out and Read Programs. Mira Singer, following in her grandmother's footsteps, has written a fantasy novel filled with adventure and magic perfect to lure adolescent patients into a book and away from their electronic diversions. On behalf of the children who will receive these books, Reach Out and Read Massachusetts would like to thank authors, Josephine Baskin Minow and Mira Singer, and Martha Minow for contacting us, for making this generous donation possible! And Also To... Carol Sardo and Chuck Colombino, who requested donations of books for Reach Out and Read at their wedding in August. Carol and Chuck, who met at a book group, extended their kindness by delivering the donations in person to Dr. Abhinav Garg at North Shore Pediatrics.
Gina Joyce and the Sterling Middle School's "Helping Hands Youth Council" in Quincy for running a book drive for the Reach Out and Read Program at Boston Medical Center.
This annual book drive has benefited the Massachusetts Reach Out and Read Program for the past four years. This year alone, students donated 1,026 books to Boston Medical Center, their largest collection so far! |
Thank You, Borders!
Borders Bookstores in Massachusetts have been tireless supporters of Reach Out and Read, and in these tight economic times their support is more welcome than ever. During the August Book Drive, cash register staff invited every customer to donate a book to Reach Out and Read, and colorful books and information were displayed at the register. As the summer of 2010 wraps up, Regional Coordinators are heading to their local Borders to pick up boxes of brand-new books that will help Reach Out and Read Sites ensure that no child leaves his or her preschool well-child visit without an age-appropriate book.
This is the seventh book drive that Glenn Stewart and his staff at the Shrewsbury store have hosted for Reach Out and Read. Also in Central Massachusetts, Sales Manager Patrick Hummel and Store Manager Peter Sherman of Borders in Marlborough have hosted several book drives to benefit Reach Out and Read. Ginny Lee Berger, Outreach Coordinator of Borders at Cambridgeside Galleria and Alex Almeida, Store Manager at N. Attleboro, are two other longtime Reach Out and Read supporters in Eastern Massachusetts.
Kudos and thanks to all!
