Respecting Our Readers. As you choose words and graphics for health-related materials, please consider not only the learning and language needs of your audience but also their emotions. This includes using non-violent language, avoiding pictures of lopped-off body parts, and describing treatment in respectful ways.

Here are some resources you might like:
  • Health Literacy from A to Z: Second Edition. By Helen Osborne. This award-winning book is considered by many as the most important health literacy text today.
  • TEDMED 2012 videos. I had the privilege of attending this amazing 3-day conference. Clink the link to watch many of the stellar talks.
  • Healthfinder.gov. This wonderful website from HHS now offers its content by syndication and API. No, I don't know exactly what those terms mean. But I do know they're good. Here are links to Content Syndication and Search API
  • Plain Talk in Complex Times. Third annual health communication conference hosted by the Center for Health Literacy with the American Public Health Association. On September 6, I'm giving a preconference workshop, "Making Numbers Make Sense." Hope to see you there.
