Book awardsWelcome!
Health literacy is getting a lot of recognition lately. I hear advocates everywhere buzzing about it at conferences, in meetings, and online.

Health literacy is also being recognized by those outside our field. I want to share a brag. My book, Health Literacy from A to Z: Second Edition just received two awards for excellence from the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA), New England Chapter. I am truly honored to be so recognized by my peers.

As you requested, here's what's new in Health Literacy Consulting

Inviting Readers to Read. Not everyone likes to read. While some may have difficulty due to limited literacy or language, others simply may not enjoy reading. This can be especially true with topics that readers are not interested in. This month's HLC How-To Tip looks at text-based ways to invite readers to read.

Some of you tell me about problems opening this link. I've talked with many techno-folks and we cannot figure out what's wrong. And so, cannot fix it. If you have trouble opening this or any other HLC How-To page, go to http://healthliteracy.com/tips.asp

Health Literacy From A to Z: Second Edition. More good news about my book. Last month, Doody's Review of Books awarded it a rating of 100 - 5 stars.

This month, Health Literacy from A to Z received a 2012 Will Solimene Award for Excellence in Medical Communication from the New England chapter of the American Medical Writers Association. I was stunned and overwhelmed when it also was awarded the Neil Duanne Award of Distinction -- given to only the very best. I am thrilled to be so honored by my peers.

TEDMED 2012
TEDMED resizedAs mentioned last month, I was invited to participate in TEDMED 2012 as a "Challenge Advocate," championing the cause of "Making Informed Choice Work Better." While this challenge didn't get voted into the Top 20, I have been asked to participate on one of the teams that did.
Indeed, we are all winners as health literacy is now widely recognized as an important issue affecting healthcare today. Together, we made this happen. Thanks everyone!
