Hispanic-Owned Businesses
If there's one type of business that you should be reaching out to, it's Hispanic-owned businesses. These businesses are growing at a pace of more than twice the national average according to the latest Census Bureau reports. Not only that, but the sales revenue of these businesses is growing substantially as well. If your credit union isn't building relationships and partnerships with your local Hispanic-owned businesses, you could be missing out. Hispanic-owned businesses have financial needs as a business entity, but the employees and the customers of these businesses have financial needs as well. Your partnership with a local Hispanic business could be as simple as referring members to a local tax preparation agency that caters to the Hispanic community to forming an indirect lending relationship with a local auto dealer. Follow these suggestions to ensure a successful community business partnership:
- Introduce your credit union to your local businesses by visiting them in person and ensuring a bilingual credit union representative participates
- Participate in your local Hispanic chamber of commerce for networking opportunities
- Invite local business owners to an open house at your credit union
- Invite local business owners to participate on your external Hispanic advisory councils
- Once you have developed a relationship with local businesses, explore a business partnership that is mutually beneficial
- Ensure both parties agree to a memorandum of understanding
- Meet with your partners regularly to discuss how the partnership is going and how you can continue to enhance and improve it.

To explain the ins-and-outs, as well as to help you determine if your credit union staff will need to make changes, Andrea Stritzke from Policyworks, llc. and Miriam De Dios from Coopera will discuss the new requirements for traditional remittance transfers.
