Update: Pepco Home Energy Savings Program for Maryland Distribution Customers

Attention Maryland Home Owners in the Pepco Service Territories

From Comprehensive Home Energy Audits priced at only $100, to rebates up to $1,200 for energy efficiency improvements, to appliance rebates, to HVAC service and equipment rebates, to free programmable thermostats, to CFL discounts, and more... Pepco brings one of the most aggressive energy efficiency programs in the country to its Maryland customers.

ecobeco provides $100 Home Energy Audit to Pepco Maryland customers.  This is not a rebate program.  You pay us $100 at the time of the visit.

After your audit, you can receive a 15% cash rebate from Pepco for professionally installed air sealing and insulation augmentation up to $1,000 in benefit.  Plus, you can receive $200 for duct sealing.  Best of all, ecobeco will handle the rebate process for you free of charge.

Combined with up to $800 in savings for an air conditioner or $750 for a heat pump replacement through the appliance rebate program, ecobeco can help you find the best deals on making energy efficiency a priority for 2010!

The goal of the Home Energy Savings Program is to get home owners like you to take action on energy conservation. That means fixing up your homes, changing out your light bulbs and shower heads, and more. Pepco is obligated by the EmPower Maryland law to reduce energy consumption in the State of Maryland by 15% by 2015.

Meanwhile, ecobeco has been working hard with our contractor partners to enhance and accelerate the amount of time it takes for you to receive your audit report and a firm proposal after your audit is complete. Our goal is to make it easier for you to say "YES" to energy efficiency improvements.

Sign up at http://www.ecobeco.com/about_schedule_pepcomd.asp to reserve your $100 energy audit.

Note: Customers who buy energy from Clean Currents or other alternatives are eligible to participate in the program.  You qualify if you 1) receive a bill from Pepco; and 2) have either a heat pump or air conditioning; and 3) live in a single-family home or town home (units in dwellings with more than 4 units do not qualify for this program).

Visit Pepco's consumer site for more information at:

NOTE:  If you are an existing ecobeco audit customer in the Pepco territory, please give Brian Toll a call directly at 240 396 2141 x704 or email Brian to discuss how you can take advantage of the Pepco Home Energy Savings Program.

ecoTip 1:  How to Control Moisture in Your Home
(This article is taken from the EPA's website on mold.  Click here to view the complete site.)

Water in your home can come from many sources. Water can enter your home by leaking or by seeping through basement floors. Showers or even cooking can add moisture to the air in your home. The amount of moisture that the air in your home can hold depends on the temperature of the air. As the temperature goes down, the air is able to hold less moisture. This is why, in cold weather, moisture condenses on cold surfaces (for example, drops of water form on the inside of a window). This moisture can encourage biological pollutants to grow.

There are many ways to control moisture in your home:
  1. Fix leaks and seepage. If water is entering the house from the outside, your options range from simple landscaping to extensive excavation and waterproofing. (The ground should slope away from the house.) Water in the basement can result from the lack of gutters or a water flow toward the house. Water leaks in pipes or around tubs and sinks can provide a place for biological pollutants to grow.
  2. Put a plastic cover over dirt in crawlspaces to prevent moisture from coming in from the ground. Be sure crawlspaces are well-ventilated.
  3. Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to remove moisture to the outside (not into the attic). Vent your clothes dryer to the outside.
  4. Turn off certain appliances (such as humidifiers or kerosene heaters) if you notice moisture on windows and other surfaces.
  5. Use dehumidifiers and air conditioners, especially in hot, humid  climates, to reduce moisture in the air, but be sure that the appliances themselves don't become sources of biological pollutants.
  6. Raise the temperature of cold surfaces where moisture condenses. Use insulation or storm windows. (A storm window installed on the inside works better than one installed on the outside.) Open doors between rooms (especially doors to closets which may be colder than the rooms) to increase circulation. Circulation carries heat to the cold surfaces. Increase air circulation by using fans and by moving furniture from wall corners to promote air and heat circulation. Be sure that your house has a source of fresh air and can expel excessive moisture from the home.
  7. Pay special attention to carpet on concrete floors. Carpet can absorb moisture and serve as a place for biological pollutants to grow. Use area rugs which can be taken up and washed often. In certain climates, if carpet is to be installed over a concrete floor, it may be necessary to use a vapor barrier (plastic sheeting) over the concrete and cover that with sub-flooring (insulation covered with plywood) to prevent a moisture problem.
Replay Announcement:  Maryland Expands Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program

Starting July 30th, Maryland consumers can receive rebates on major household appliances purchased in four additional appliance categories, each related to cooling. The purpose of these incentives is to encourage residents to replace outdated, inefficient appliances in their homes with ENERGY STAR-rated equivalents, helping end users both save money and reduce strain on the electrical grid.

The expanded incentives program, which is still managed by your local utility, offers rebates on purchases or installations of central air conditioning units ($500), air source heat pumps ($500), room air conditioners ($25) and freezers ($100).  The appliance must be purchased/installed on or after July 30, 2010 to qualify.  The appliance must meet efficiency standards, which are described on your utility's website.

This expansion supplements existing incentives for the purchase of qualifying super-efficient clothes washers ($100), refrigerators ($50), and electric heat pump water heaters ($300).

Attention Pepco Customers:  You can combine the Maryland rebate with the Pepco HVAC Efficiency Program to save up to $800 on AC or Heat Pump replacements.

Program details, additional information and terms and conditions as well as rebate forms are available at http://energy.maryland.gov/appliancerebateprogram.asp.  From this site, customers of Allegheny Power, BGE, Delmarva, Pepco and SMECO can click on the link to their utility's website.
ecoTip 2: Energy Tracking Devices
ecobeco's Reuven Walder was recently featured on HGTV to discuss the benefits of employing energy tracking devices to improve energy efficiency. Active measuring and energy management not only allow homeowners to identify energy problems, but also develop better energy management solutions that let homeowners see quantifiable results.

P3 Kill A Watt EZOne of the most direct ways of improving efficiency is to measure the amount of energy used by an appliance. This can be accompliBelkin Conserve 8 Outletsshed by using a device such as a Kilowatt Meter (from Green Irene), which measures the amount of energy used when you plug the appliance into the device. It also measures the phantom power draw. Once a problem appliance has been identified you can take steps to improve your energy efficiency. This includes installing Smart Power Strips such as the Smart Strip Surge Protector or the Belkin Conserve Power Strip(from Green Irene).

Switching out appliances for more energy efficient versions, such as those with Energy StarŪ ratings, is also another effective cost saving measure. There are incentive programs from most utilities that exist to make the purchase of energy efficient appliances more cost effective.

Dimmable CFLOther strategies, such as replacing incandescent bulbs with CFLs can provide such dramatic savings that their initial cost is paid back in less than 12 months by the drastic reduction in energy consumption of the bulb. To find the type of lighting replacement option most suited to you, click here.

Programmable thermostats, similarly, can provide significant returns by synchronizing the amount of energy consumed in the home with occupant activities and time of year considerations. They can be programmed for specific settings to deliver savings relevant to daytime vs. nighttime, or summer vs. winter; and all without sacrificing any comfort within the home.

Replay: Appliance Rebate Programs

Attention Maryland, DC and Virginia Residents!

The Department of Energy has launched the Appliance Rebate Program across the United States. Each state is implementing the program in a slightly different way (of course). As with other programs with fixed buckets of money, these are first come first served programs, and the duration of the program will simply depends on how long they have funds available to distribute, so be sure to act fast.
