ecobeco Labs Announces Discovery of Perpetual Energy Source

Coming off his discovery of "Igloo Beans" last winter, ecobeco Labs Director Curt Christenson made another startling and exciting discovery and he called ecobeco headquarters...

"I was touring important Southern Nevada geological sites to find fertile soil for my Igloo Beans when I awoke one day in Las Vegas.  I don't remember exactly how I got there, but I was sitting in my hotel lobby nursing a wicked hangover when I saw this man standing on a miniature stage spin around, patting his jacket to show that nothing was in it.  Then suddenly he moves his hands in this funny pattern, and he pulls out a bouquet of flowers from thin air!  It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen.  Then he did it again!

And then it hit me.  This man held the key to a perpetual biomass source, a fuel that could power our transportation infrastructure for years to come.  I reached for a napkin and did the math... what if this man could pull out a bouquet of flowers every 5 seconds for a year?  What about every second?  This might be even more important than Igloo Beans!"

And just as he said last year, with no hint of irony in his voice, ecobeco Chief Executive Brian Toll replied: "You're doing a heck of a job, Curtie!"

APRIL FOOLS!

and now for some real news...
Revamped ecobeco.com

Click here to visit the new and improved ecobeco.com.

You'll notice 3 major changes to our website:
  • Multi-Family - We have increased our focus on helping mid-rise and high-rise condo and apartment buildings.  As a result, Multi-Family is now its own tab.
  • Commercial LED Lighting Solutions - ecobeco is a distributor for LED Lighting Solutions providing LED lighting for virtually any application.  If your space has 12 or 24 hour lighting, give us a call to get a free lighting audit and free estimate for lighting replacement.  The economics are compelling with payback periods as short as 1-2 years, and bulbs that last 10 years or more!
  • Green Irene Partnership - In order to expand our product offerings, ecobeco has teamed with on-line retailer Green Irene.  At this time, the ecobeco shopping cart and Green Irene shopping carts are different, requiring separate accounts.  You can shop either site with confidence.  Just visit our main shopping tab, and click on the Green Irene icon to learn more.
We hope you enjoy these improvements.
Virginia Update

There are two updates this month:
  • Thank you Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment - We enjoyed being a title sponsor of the ACE Expo last weekend.  We met over 100 home owners and had a chance to educate them on the benefits of energy efficiency and how energy audits can help them improve comfort and air quality, and save energy, money, and the environment.
  • Virginia Energy Efficiency Rebates - Gone so soon? - The rebates launched on Monday March 22, and based on customer feedback, it appears the wait list started on the morning of the 23rd.  And on March 26th the request list was closed again.  If you have a rebate in "APPROVED" status, that means you have 6 months to complete your energy audit and get your home retrofitted with energy efficiency improvements.
    • Wait list customers don't despair... the DDME advises you to be patient as many funds reserved are not spent and will be re-issued to folks on the wait list over the next 6 to 8 months.  Remember that the economics and comfort improvements are worthwhile rebate or no rebate, so you don't have to put your project on hold waiting for rebates.  Work you do today can be claimed on a rebate request later.  You don't have to wait for approval from DMME to get the audit and retrofit work done.

ecoTip: Simple Ways to Save Water

We've all seen it, that little drip that comes out of your kitchen or bathroom sink from time to time. We might have thought, "no big deal."

According to the United States Geological Survey, a single leak, dripping 30 drops per minute, will use three gallons of water a day. That's the equivalent of 27 baths, or 100+ showers over the course of the entire year. A leaky toilet is even worse, wasting about 22 gallons of water a day. How do you know if your toilet is leaking?  Just put food coloring or a "toilet leak tablet" into your toilet tank, wait about 15 minutes, and see if the water in the toilet changes color.  If it does, you have a leak!  Click here for the ecobeco store, which sells leak testers and toilet tank banks to reduce water per flush.

About 30% of all water wasted in the home is literally flushed down the toilet. Much of this comes from the fact that most older model toilets use up to 5 gallons per flush, in stark contrast to more recent efficient models that use 1.6 or even 1.28 gallons per flush. Low-flow showerheads (under 2.0 gpm) can also provide you with some substantial savings, cutting consumption by 25% - 70%.  Older showerheads can be up to 5 gpm, while the current federal standard is 2.5 gpm.  The latest 1.5 - 2.0 gallon showerhead with aerating technology feels just as good as a 2.5 gpm showerhead.

Improved water efficiency can cut down on utility cost for both water use and gas used to warm your hot water tank. Other tips include washing clothes in cold water instead of hot water, using your dishwasher instead of running hot water to clean dishes.
Arlington County Public Television and ecobeco Team Up To Educate about what to Expect During an Energy Audit

Arlington County Public Television's Green It series recently featured our own Reuven Walder.  In this episode, Reuven and the Arlington's Green Man examine several common issues that arise during energy audits. Reuven uses a blower door, an infrared camera scan, and a combustion safety test to track down the causes of the Green Man's problems.  He explains how the attic and basement are often much more serious sources of air leakage than the windows and door leaks most people experience on a day to day basis.  But because attic and basement leaks are out of view, people don't know about them, and that can cause people to invest in solutions that are not always optimal.  The video outlines the discoveries and importance of a home energy audit and what you should expect during the audit and report.

As with any hired service provider, it is critical that an energy auditor is properly certified. The Building Performance Institute and Residential Energy Services Network maintain lists of certified auditors, as do many local or state municipalities.  Of course, ecobeco is on those lists, so no need to look any further!
