Be You
...at the Inaugural Cebrin Goodman Teen Institute 2012

On Sunday, July 22, over 350 youth participants, adult sponsors, and ITI volunteer staff joined together at to launch the Cebrin Goodman Teen Institute at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. This year marks the 39th annual Teen Institute and we celebrated by honoring the legacy of ITI and the promise of the new, expanded CGTI. Thanks to philanthropist Larry Goodman, founder of the Skokie-based Cebrin Goodman Center, who CGTI committed $1.1 million to CGTI for a three year period to support youth drug prevention. The Cebrin Goodman Center's generous support adds expanded outreach, scholarships, and additional events throughout the year to the program. Mr. Goodman's "BElief in YOU" couldn't be more clear- and he raises the CGTI program to a new standard for excellence as he challenges us to become the Teen Institute model for the entire country to follow.

And we are off to a strong start! We had 367 participants, adult mentors, and volunteer staff registered. This is the largest group since 2006, and next year will be even bigger and better than ever! For five remarkable days youth and staff worked together to learn about Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) prevention.

Kicking off the Opening Ceremony, the legendary Mike Bruni, an ITI pioneer and motivational speaker, took the youth on a journey to come to know our namesake, Cebrin Goodman, honor the legacy of ITI, and explore the exciting future of CGTI. The beloved Shaun Derik, from R.E.A.C.H. Communications, headlined the first day with his "Dreams and Detours" experience- a perfect start to a phenomenal week!  A very special thank you goes out to Shaun for his dedication to the CGTI program. Mr. Eric Rowles, from Leading to Change, got everyone singing, dancing, with his music-filled "Stand and Deliver" leadership session. And back by popular demand, was MWAH! Performing Arts Group, who took us from laughter to tears through compelling songs that illustrate some of the real-world challenges teens face today. Keith Williams, from R.E.A.C.H. Communications challenged us to our own journey of self-discovery and personal power, and encouraged us to create our own "passport" for our lives.

A key component of CGTI is for youth participants to take what they learn and put it into action.  Throughout the week youth meet in Community Action Teams (C.A.T.).  These teams, made up of youth from the same school or geographical location, work to create an action plan for positive change in the community!  A big congratulations goes out to Menard County School and Community Task Force, who won the $500 CAT team award for their outstanding work on their Action Plan from last year. IADDA will soon be awarding another team with the best Action Plan developed at CGTI this year.

A heartfelt thanks goes out to all of the wonderful staff and young people who help make CGTI a success. I am incredibly impressed with and grateful for each of you. Thanks for making my first year fantastic!

Athens' TMD and PORTA's THINK Force win CAT Achievement Award at CGTI

The Cebrin Goodman Teen Institute (CGTI), formally Illinois Teen Institute (ITI), was held at Illinois Wesleyan University, from July 22 to July 26, 2012. Pictured are students who attended: Bailey Menard Co CAT award Mitchum, Chris Griffith, Jade McFarland on staff, Kay Daniel as mentor, and Logan Dowell. Also attending, but not pictured, were Amber Johnson, Kaitlyn Mitchum, and Skyler Johnson. The Teen Institute is 5 days packed with group energizers, team building, making friends, and attending workshops. With over 300 students from Illinois attending, it is non-stop fun. In the midst of the fun, teens also learn about drug prevention, how to stay drug and alcohol free, and plan ways they can make a positive impact on their local community. This past year, Teens Making a Difference (TMD) from Athens High School and THINK Force from PORTA High School teamed together to hold their first Snowflake event and to revitalize Snowball in Menard County. The plan was first developed last summer at ITI, during their CAT meetings. Throughout the year, the plan was carried out, and submitted for consideration when team members attended this year's CGTI. CGTI awards one Community Action Team (CAT) award annually at the Teen Institute. Our local team is especially proud to be this year's recipients. While many of last year's team members recently graduated, this year's TMD and THINK Force are anticipating a busy year as they once again strive to carry out their new CAT plan. This year's plan also includes holding both a Snowflake and a Snowball event. Students interested in attending the events should listen for announcements during the school year as dates and times have not yet been scheduled. TMD and THINK Force are both part of the Menard County School and Community Task Force's Operation Snowball chapter. For more information about Operation Snowball contact Kay Daniel at 632-2984 or at kdaniel@menardchd.org. You will also find us at the upcoming fall festivals or by checking our website: www.menardtaskforce.org.

The Menard County School and Community Task Force reminds parents to "Be the Excuse your child needs to stay alcohol, tobacco, and drug free".

Order Red Ribbon Week Supplies
Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. This year Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated October 21 - 27, 2011 . Red Ribbon Week serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our youth through a commitment to drug prevention and education and a personal commitment to live drug free lives with the ultimate goal being the creation of drug free America. And, perhaps more importantly, Red Ribbon Week commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who died at the hands of drug traffikers in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs to keep our country and children safe. Order prevention campaign supplies and benefit Operation Snowball.
