Dear From the Field Subscribers,  
 

I hope that your holiday season was enjoyable and provided the opportunity to recharge yourselves to take on your 2011 opportunities and challenges.

 

We will have moments of opportunity in our careers that can boost our standing in our organizations. It will be occasions in which we can demonstrate our value to our organization. These opportunities could come from situations such as the first day of using a new solution, system, or process; addressing a problem that has surfaced; or the need to cut through confusion.

 

I was an Army officer prior to my entry into the corporate world. During my Army days, I used an instrument that enabled me to lead units to accomplish objectives and to overcome challenges. I applied this instrument during my corporate days to capitalize on my corporate moments of opportunity.

 

This edition of From the Field shares this instrument.

She Met Elvis...

The military instrument that I used was the Operations Order. The instrument included the following components.

  • Situation
  • Mission
  • Execution
  • Administration
  • Logistics
  • Command
  • Signal

One of my ROTC instructors provided a phrase that allowed me to quickly recall the components of the Operations Order.

  

 

She met Elvis and later committed sin.

  

 

Following is an explanation of the Operations Order.

  • Situation (She)
    • What is happening?
    • What is the problem, need or opportunity?
    • What is driving the problem, need, or opportunity?
  • Mission (Met)
    • What do we want to accomplish?
    • What are our deliverables?
    • Why are we doing this?
  • Execution (Elvis)
    • How will we accomplish our objectives?
    • What is the sequence of tasks to be completed?
    • Who is responsible for doing what and when?
    • How will we coordinate the execution of tasks?
    • How will we monitor and communicate our progress?
    • How and to whom will we communicate issues and problems we encounter?
    • How will we resolve issues?
    • What is our back-up plan?
  • Administration (And), Logistics (Later)
    • What support do we have?
    • Who or what functions are providing the support?
    • Who are the points of contact for providing and coordinating the support?
  • Command (Committed)
    • Who is the leader, person responsible for ensuring the accomplishment of the objectives?
    • Who are the other members of the leadership team and what are their responsibilities?
    • Who will communicate changes and adjustments?
  •  Signal (Sin)
    • When will we kick off or start the execution of the mission?
    • How will the start be communicated to the team and individuals impacted by what we are doing?
