Conversations vs. Commitments
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
During the course of a networking conversation, the person seeking assistance usually provides a resume. After all, we want to familiarize others with our qualifications, background, accomplishments and how we can be contacted. However, resumes do not inform individuals of how they can help us. We can inform individuals and/or provide a separate document to provide this information. These ways of informing rely on the accuracy of the notes individuals take, their memory and keeping track of a separate document.
I recommend to my clients the use of a personal marketing document that I call the Personal Summary. This document informs individuals of how they can help with a search for a position or new career opportunity. The Personal Summary includes the following components.
- Career Summary
- Career Highlights
- Opportunities You Are Seeking
- Assistance You Need
- Contact Information
Career Summary should be a statement of your personal brand - the value you offer and what makes you unique.
Career Highlights should include 3-5 of your major accomplishments. Make sure that your Career Highlights reflect the statement of your personal brand that you communicate in the Career Summary. Think like an attorney. Career Summary is your opening argument. Career Highlights is the evidence.
Opportunities You Are Seeking should communicate the types of situations that could require your skills and capabilities - situations where you can add value.
Assistance You Need should express the types of connections you are seeking to help you identify opportunities. For example, you could state that you are seeking connections to individuals who work or have worked in the industries or situations that may offer opportunities you are seeking. Or, you could include individuals or companies that serve or support these industries or situations. This could include salespersons, suppliers and consultants.
Contact Information should include your email address, telephone numbers (mobile, land) and home address.
The Personal Summary reduces the guesswork for assisting you and allows individuals in your network to make efficient use of their time. It is a personal marketing aid. It also makes you stand out from those who are simply providing resumes.
- Are you seeking ideas and methods that will help you stand above the crowd of others who are seeking positions and career opportunities?
- Do you want to reflect an image of being innovative?
- Have you grown tired of paper exchanges or resume forwarding with no results?
