Dear From the Field Subscribers,

Today, companies are faced with unprecedented business challenges.  These challenges include global competition, rapid changes in the marketplace, constant pressure on profit margins and meeting the quarterly expectations of the investment community.  Companies have taken measures such as downsizing, restructuring, outsourcing and changing the way talent is managed to maximize the value that they can realize from their assets.  To the employee, these measures have resulted in increased competition for promotions, job openings and for exceptional merit pay increases.

When competition increases, companies have to make their products unique to capture or retain customers and/or increase what customers are willing to pay for their products.  Being unique also applies to individuals as they seek to capture or retain their customers and increase what their customers will pay.  For individuals, customers are current or potential employers.   Capturing customers is landing a new position or promotion.  Retaining is maintaining employment within the company.  Increasing what the customer pays is getting exceptional merit pay increases.

This edition of From the Field provides suggestions on how you can make yourself unique in today's employment marketplace.

You vs. Others: What makes You Unique?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How can you determine what makes you unique?  I suggest 3 sources of information.
  • Input from peers, colleagues, and current and former supervisors
  • Performance appraisals and evaluations
  • Your finest moments
When seeking input from your peers, colleagues and supervisors, consider asking questions such as:
  • What descriptions or adjectives come to mind when you see me, hear my name, or think of me?
  • In what types of situations would you ask for my participation or help?
  • In what situations am I at my best?
You can also receive input into determining what makes you unique by participating in 360° feedback surveys.  These surveys are assessments that provide feedback from your superiors, peers, and subordinates on how you are perceived.  If your company does not offer 360° surveys, you can conduct your own.  There are several feedback surveys available on the Internet at no, to minimal costs.  Search the Internet for survey tools using keywords such as, 360 degree, multi-rater feedback, multi-source feedback and multi-source assessment.
Reviewing your performance appraisals and evaluations can reveal common themes or recurring comments about traits and strengths that make you unique.
The things that define you can become evident in your finest moments, those situations and events when you excelled and overcame adversity and challenges.  List your most satisfying accomplishments and then list what actions you took, or characteristics you displayed, in order to achieve your goal.
By making such a list, you will begin to notice common themes and traits, helping you define what makes you unique and valuable.
Your uniqueness could be captured in labels such as:
  • Problem solver
  • Organizer
  • Calm under fire
  • Innovator
  • Influencer
  • Team builder
  • Thought leader
