Dear From the Field Subscribers,  

Lotus 1-2-3 was a very successful product when it was introduced in the 1980's.  It increased productivity by automating the preparation and maintenance of spreadsheets, a core activity for preparing and presenting quantitative information in the business world.  It replaced the 13 column worksheet pads and the calculator.  Being proficient in the use of Lotus 1-2-3 became a core skill for business professionals.  Lotus Corporation was sitting on top of the office software applications world.  Then, Microsoft introduced Excel with features and capabilities beyond what 1-2-3 offered.  Microsoft, not only introduced enhancements to the preparation and maintenance of spreadsheets, but also integrated the preparation and use of spreadsheets into other activities such as presentations and preparation of text documents.  As a result, Excel became the #1 and dominant spreadsheet application and Lotus 1-2-3 faded from the scene as a major office software application. 
 
Successful businesses understand that standing still is not a viable option for continuing to create and grow value for its investors.  Customer needs change and competitors seek to satisfy those needs and to introduce products that offer additional features, capabilities and functionality.  Successful businesses understand that refreshing and upgrading their product offerings is a requirement not an option. 
 
Move or Lose Ground

Just like businesses, standing still is not a viable option for individuals.  You may have developed skills and capabilities and delivered on your personal brand promise.  You may have experienced increases in your compensation and received promotions.  Then, you hit a plateau.  The raises become fewer and smaller and the promotions stop.    You are no longer assigned to high visibility projects.  In many instances, individuals hit plateaus because they do not recognize and respond to changes in the employment marketplace.  They ride their success and sit on their laurels.  At the same time, new business concepts, problem-solving and analytical techniques, and software  applications emerge and change the needs of the employment marketplace and what companies will pay for certain skills and capabilities.  The marketplace moved while the individuals stood still.   
 
Businesses that continue to deliver exceptional results use the Continuous Improvement Process to maintain their competitive edge.  Companies enable the Continuous Improvement Process by:

 
  • Soliciting and acting on feedback from customers.
  • Researching and incorporating marketplace trends and developments into their products.
  • Following and quickly responding to the actions of competitors.       
     
You can apply the business process to develop your Personal Continuous Improvement Process.  This process will enable you to keep your capabilities and skills (your product) competitive in the employment marketplace.  Following are 5 actions that you can take.
 
  1. Participate in 360° feedback surveys and act on the feedback you receive.
  2. Designate a specific and recurring time to research new tools, business models and techniques.
  3. Research the current curriculum for your field at colleges and universities to discover developments in your field.
  4. Connect with and observe new, especially recent college graduates, who join your company. (New graduates have learned the new developments.  New hires may have used the new tools and techniques at their former company.)
  5. Join a professional organization in your field.  (You may feel that you are too busy, but the time investment could generate excellent returns for you.)
 
 
These actions can prevent you from becoming a Lotus 1-2-3 of 1984 in a 2010 marketplace.
