Dear From the Field Subscribers,  

We are approaching Labor Day.  Summer is coming to an end.  Vacations have been taken and companies and individuals are beginning to focus on ensuring that they accomplish the objectives they established for 2010.  Where are you in terms of accomplishing your objectives?  Are you going to make it?
 
Closing 2009/Opening 2010, the December 9, 2009 edition of From the Field, recommended that individuals establish a personal Performance Monitoring System (PMS).   PMS provides the means for gauging your progress during the year toward accomplishing your annual objectives.
Relooking 2010

There may be a number of factors that could be inhibiting your achievement of your objectives.  These factors could include later than expected approval of funds and the assignment of resources you need; persons or groups upon which you are dependent being behind in providing what you need from them; changes in organizational leadership and/or focus; and unfavorable business conditions (lower than expected revenues and profits).  Regardless the factors, your annual performance rating, compensation and standing in your organization could be in jeopardy.  You can approach this situation by either:
 
  1. Taking no action and hoping that things will work out on their own or through the actions of others.
  2. Taking actions on what you can control to influence what happens to you.
     
I ask that you think of challenges you have observed or experienced before you decide the approach you will take.  Have you noticed that the individual with a plan to address a challenge is the one who takes center stage and influences other individuals who are impacted by the challenge?  That individual is like the person with the flashlight in a dark room.  To get out of the room, others follow the individual with the light.  She/he sets the direction the others will take.
 
If you choose Option 1, I wish you the best because you are placing your fortunes in the hands of luck.  
 
By choosing Option 2, you become the individual with the flashlight.  You can set and take a direction that works to your advantage.  Following are steps that you can take to influence what happens to you.
 
  1. Identify what is keeping or will keep you from achieving your objective.
  2. Evaluate the options to address what is keeping you from achieving your objective including determination of advantages and disadvantage related to the options.
  3. Select the option that presents the best outcomes for you.
  4. Specify a plan, actions to execute the option you selected.
  5. Schedule a discussion with your boss to present your plan.
 
Taking these steps will position you to influence decisions that will impact you.  You will act rather than being acted upon.
