This Is Next Year!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We often start the New Year by stating our intentions to make the coming year better than previous years. We may even think of the New Year as a breakthrough year, one in which we will accomplish great things and change the course of our careers. As the year began, developments and situations at our companies such as responses to disappointing first quarter sales, unexpected increases in costs, a new product introduced by a competitor, the company's announcement of a reorganization or reduction in staff or a new boss consume our focus and our time. The I am going to becomes I will try or get to it later this year and eventually becomes wait 'til next year. After several wait 'til next years, we may even find ourselves settling into that's the way it is.
You must address the challenges and situations at work. After all, that is why you are employed by your company. You solve problems and support operations and the execution of company strategies. However, times and circumstances change. The needs and focus of companies shift to respond to changes. Sometimes these changes result in changes or diminished roles for employees. A new role may not be one that the employee enjoys or is satisfying or fulfilling. And, the changes may result in a loss of employment as companies may reorganize or downsize. What a dilemma! Perform today to satisfy the requirements of your job, while realizing that change is likely and the change may not work in your favor. How can you deal with this dilemma?
Let's start with relationships. Relationships define how we interact with others. There are 3 types of relationships.
- Island
- Parasitic
- Symbiotic
Island relationships are based on the belief that an individual can thrive without the support of others and others do not need anything from the individual. Beyond being left alone on a deserted island, I cannot think of any other situations in which island relationships are effective. No individual has everything. We depend on others to provide the things that we cannot provide. Others depend on us to provide what they need
In Parasitic relationships, individuals provide and get nothing from others in return. The individual is the host and others are the parasites. The parasite wins and the host loses.
In Symbiotic relationships, an individual supports other in return for support from others. It is the win-win situation. I refer to the Symbiotic relationship as operating in the Green Zone. The Green Zone is that overlapping space where 2 or more individuals mutually support one another. How do you find the Green Zone in your relationships? How can you locate or create your path to the Green Zone?
There are 3 things that are essential to finding your Green Zone.
-
Know what you want.
-
Determine how to get what you want.
- Take action to get what you want.
Fields of Success uses the following steps to help its clients find and operate in their Green Zones.
-
Identify or confirm who you are (your values) and what you have (your strengths, personal assets).
-
Establish a vision of what you want and where you want to be. (Personal Vision Statement)
-
Set goals to clarify your destination (what you want and where you want to be).
-
Establish plans (actions and when) to focus efforts and resources to achieve goals.
-
Do it! (execute the plan.)
When you operate in the Green Zone, you will focus on today while taking steps for tomorrow (your future).
Regardless of what you say or intend to do, what you do today will dictate the results you will get tomorrow.
Action expresses priorities. (Mahatma Gandhi)
The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities. (Stephen Covey)
