Greetings!
September is a busy month! It's time for fall harvest festivals, farm tours, leaf peeping, apple picking, and getting ready to "hunker down" for the fall and winter. Well, before we all start to hibernate indoors, join us on the farm for our September Farm Tour with Pete and Jen's Backyard Birds. We are offering open tours of our operations so you can see how everything operates in our graceful pasture dance. On Tuesday, September 15th from 4 - 7pm, we'll be hosting a "Pasture Walk" to discuss Multi-Species Grazing ($5 donation to NOFA), and on Wednesday, September 16th, we'll be hosting a CRAFT farm visit from 4 - 6 pm (free) to educate young apprentices in the craft of rotational grazing and pasture-based livestock. Both are informal tours with lots of Q&A. Come along, bring the kids, and get ready to walk and learn how we produce the tastiest meat with the utmost respect and care of our animals and the environment. Parking will be in the grassy field near the Verrill Farm stand (and our mobile layer coops). We will be traveling around the farm within a few miles to see all our livestock. Be prepared to walk on uneven terrain and hop in/out of your car a few times. We'll encourage carpooling on site. Invite your friends!
Other fun events are happening this weekend in Concord if you are out this way....Saturday 9/12, we will be at the annual Concord Farmer's Market, sponsored by the Concord Agricultural Committee from 10 am - 2 pm, on the Milldam (Main Street) in Downtown Concord with all the farms in the area participating. Rain or shine, we hope to see many of you there!
On Sunday 9/13 from noon - 4 pm, at Verrill Farm, you can enjoy our very own Pete and Jen's Pastured Pork at the Pig Roast and BBQ! Yes, it will be our very own delicious Tamworth pig on the spit. Music and hayrides will be sure to entertain.
Later in the month, on Sunday, Sept 27th from 1 - 4 pm, Jen's organization, the New Entry Sustainable Farming Project is hosting their 8th annual Fall Harvest Festival in Dracut, MA. Come enjoy some live folk music, hayrides, games for kids (bobbing for apples!), and delicious ethnic food. Suggested donation $10 for a great cause - supporting new farmers! We hope to see many of you around this weekend, next week for the tours, or otherwise very soon! Best, Pete and JenPete and Jen's Backyard Birdsbackyardbirds@comcast.net

Goodies at the Mini-Store!
Have you stopped by the mini-store lately? We are brimming with farm-fresh goodness! What's new?
- Eggs! Back in production, our new layers are full steam ahead and our "retiring" flock got a second wind. Get the most delicious, fresh, and pasture-raised organic fed eggs around.
- Stewing hens - stock up for winter, these "retired layers" make perfect soup chickens, stock, chicken & dumplings, and are great in a slow cooker so you don't even have to turn on the oven!
- Grassfed Beef - get your local, 100% grass fed burgers & prime cuts of beef. Hurry - only a few steaks left (Tbone, sirloin, and rib)!
- Sheep - we have ground sheep, stew meat, rib chops, shoulder chops, and loin chops. More to come in October!
- Rabbit - great stewed, braised, grilled, or roasted!
- Lard - making fruit pies? Crusts lovers love our lard. Fat is back on the menu!
- Veggies - now harvesting: basil, husk cherries, tomatillos, chard, kale, and cut flowers!

Sign up for Oct 3 Chicken Processing!
If you are interested in helping out with our next round of chicken processing, send us an email. We've had a wonderful season so far with scores of amazing volunteers! It's an engaging and honest experience.
To read all about the experience and visualize it with talented photography, check out Kenji Alt's blog about the Saturday in June when he helped us process birds...and his other wonderful musings, poignant thoughts, and artful photos at Goodeater.org. Keep your eye's posted to the newstands in September for a feature article on the MPPU in the fall edition of Edible Boston.
Thanks again to all of our amazing and generous volunteers! |
