| Connecticut Classic Weekend hosted by Hartford Golf |
|
We had a great weekend in West Hartford for the Connecticut Classic. Even the remnants of Hurricane Ida couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of the 40 hardy competitors who played in the Connecticut Women's Classic. The weather was a bit of a tease with the rain diminishing for a time but always coming back with a vengeance. Fortunately, the competitors all seemed to bring enough changes of clothing so that at least for a few minutes they could be dry. The hut was filled with lots of laughter and a few tears as memories of Winnie Hatch were exchanged. Winnie's sister, Courtia Worth, who chaired the event, brought one of Winnie's national medals and a few pictures to honor the late champion.
The semi finals pitted Philadelphians Laurie Hissey and Coey Burkhart (who got the prize for the furthest distance traveled) against the #1 seeds Cynthia Dardis and Amy Shay. Dardis and Shay prevailed in three sets. The other semi-final saw local Sheri Shea and Susan Lovejoy defeat Long Islanders Liz Jaffe and Lisa Rudloff. The final was a tough see-saw battle played under on again, off again rain. Susan Lovejoy and Sheri Shea defeated the #1 seeds in a great 3 set match. Main Draw: Lovejoy-Shea def. Dardis-Shay 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 Consolation: Layton-Bowers def. Bloom-Redden 7-6, 6-1 Cons. Reprieve: Johnson-Nero def. Cannon-Colvard 06, 6-1, 6-2 Qtr. Reprieve: Charlton-Faig def. Arden-Brzova 6-4, 6-7, 7-5
My thanks to APTA Executive Director Ann Sheedy who made the trip east to attend this event and for her report above that I cut and pasted from the APTA website. I don't have much information about the men's event yet because I did have anywhere to steal it from. But I do know they had much better weather on Sunday where Mike Stulac & Drew Broderick prevailed over Jerry Albrikes & Johan du Randt in a hard fought final.
We need some teams to fill out draws this weekend!
We're planning for great platform tennis weather for the two events scheduled for this coming weekend. The Pioneer Valley Men's 95+ is in Longmeadow MA. on Saturday and as of this morning, Rob Durfee was still accepting teams. Better contact him soon if you want to play. We expect this to be a full draw.
The RI Mixed Open is on Sunday and I'm told they could really use a few more teams to round out his draw. Grab your partner and head to Westerly this Sunday. Jim Dey at the Shelter Harbor Inn is the contact for this event. He can be reached at 401-322-8883 or jim@shelterharborinn.com
There is nothing scheduled for Turkey Day weekend but we're sure are rolling again the following weekend. The top men & women of our region will be heading across the pond for the Long Island Invitational and we have two regional favorites on December 5th. The women will be playing in Essex, CT at the Shoreline Women's "B" Tournament. And the truly classic Brae Burn Men's "B" Tournament is in West Newton, MA that same day. Be sure not to miss these events. The contact information for both those events are listed below.
